Mathare United is set to play host to Tusker FC on Sunday afternoon in what will be the key attraction for Match Day 10 in the Kenyan Premier League.

The Slum Boys leapfrogged Gor Mahia to move to the summit of the KPL standings after a 3-2 win away to Nakumatt FC in a midweek Premier League tie.

Cliff Nyakeya, who scored the only goal of the match when Mathare beat Chemelil Sugar at the Kenyatta Stadium last weekend, continued with his purple patch by finding the back of the net in the first minute of the match.

Veteran defender Donald Mosoti converted from the spot to level matters for the hosts midway through the first half, although either of the sides could have gone into the break with the lead had they been more prolific in their finishing.

The visitors won a penalty soon after the restart when a rash challenge on Mathare skipper George Owino left the referee with little option but to point to the spot.

Up stepped Francis Omondi who discourteously sent the keeper the wrong way to restore Mathare’s lead.

Clifford Alwanga put his side in the driving seat with a belter that ultimately guided Mathare to victory, despite Mosoti’s penalty conversion deep in injury time.

The win now has Francis Kimanzi’s charges on 20 points, a point above defending champions Gor Mahia who still have two games in hand.

The Slum Boys yet again have a good chance to stretch their lead at the top of the table and pile pressure, in the inescapable absence of K’Ogalo.

Gor will be attending to their continental duties this weekend when they welcome ABSA Premiership side Supersport United for the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup play off.

Tusker have thus far had a crestfallen start to the 2018 campaign, often struggling to cope with pressure and getting in among the goal scoring act. Despite being catalyzed by the sending off of Ingwe goalkeeper Gabriel Andika, their 4-2 win over AFC Leopards last weekend was nonetheless a timely shot in the arm for the Brewers, one that may very well alter the course of their entire season.

The victory, only their second of the season, propelled Tusker to 13th on the Premier League table on nine points from eight matches; eleven [points] adrift of leaders Mathare.

Although coach Kimanzi has alluded to the fact that his side has been conceding far too many goals- 12 in their last nine matches to be precise- Tusker’s problem this season has, by and large, been finding the goals.

The eleven-time KPL champions have failed to score in five of their first eight matches this season, but Mathare United often win matches by outscoring their opponents, seeing as they have a porous back line.
