Kyrgios, Kokkinakis team up for Australian Open doubles comeback
Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis are set to reunite at the 2025 Australian Open doubles tournament, aiming to recreate their unforgettable 2022 run as the “Special Ks.”
The pair captured the title that year in a surprising upset, defying tennis betting odds and captivating fans around the world.
“Everyone loved it last time — we loved it last time,” Kokkinakis said.
“It was so much fun. It’s definitely not going to be the priority for us, but we feel that we owe it to people to get back out there and have some fun.”
Kokkinakis, currently ranked No.77, has been in strong form during the latter half of the 2024 season, securing victories over top-30 players such as Ben Shelton, Arthur Fils, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Felix Auger-Aliassime.
He expressed confidence in Kyrgios’s ability to return to top form for the Grand Slam.
“His body is in good nick, which I’m sure it will be [when the Australian Open starts],” Kokkinakis said.
“He’s always a dangerous threat. It’s great for fans in Australia and fans all over the world. He’s a different cat. He obviously has a different energy about him and he’s a hell of a player.”
Despite a series of injuries that have limited Kyrgios to just three matches since his quarterfinal appearance at the 2022 US Open, the 29-year-old remains a formidable presence on the court.
Tennis betting sites are optimistic about his chances in the singles competition, with Bovada placing him on the eighth line of betting at +4000, alongside players such as Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Holger Rune, and Arthur Fils.
Top favorites for the singles title include Jannik Sinner (+175), Carlos Alcaraz (+240), and Novak Djokovic (+300).
The Australian Open begins on Sunday, January 12, in Melbourne, promising an exciting start to the year’s tennis calendar.
