Lakey Peterson and Filipe Toledo triumph at WSL Corona Open J-Bay 2023

Filipe Tolden and Lakey Peterson win JBay 2023

Lakey Peterson from the USA and Filipe Toledo from Brazil emerged victorious in the Corona Open J-Bay, Stop No. 9 on the World Surf League (WSL) 2023 Championship Tour (CT). The event took place at the stunning Supertubes in Jeffreys Bay, Eastern Cape, South Africa, where the surf conditions were perfectly groomed, offering waves between three to five feet.

During the Finals Day, the slightly slower conditions posed challenges for some surfers, but the world’s best athletes showcased their skills, providing exciting matchups throughout the day.

Lakey Peterson’s triumph marked her fifth CT event win, bringing her closer to the WSL Final 5 picture. The Californian surfer had faced tough opponents throughout the event but managed to overcome them all, including Caitlin Simmers, Caroline Marks, and two-time World Champion Tyler Wright, before defeating Molly Picklum in the final heat.

Filipe Toledo, the reigning World Champion and current rankings leader, exhibited near-perfection in the final against Ethan Ewing, the defending event winner. Toledo’s remarkable display of progressive, technical surfing earned him his third J-Bay title, further solidifying his top spot in the rankings.

Molly Picklum, who broke the trend of quarterfinal exits, secured the runner-up position in this event and also qualified for the WSL Final 5. Her remarkable rise in the sport has been impressive, and she is likely to contend for the ultimate crown in the future.

Ethan Ewing’s outstanding performance throughout the event earned him a spot in the WSL Final 5, giving him a chance to fight for the World Title at Trestles later in the year.

Additionally, four surfers received the good news of qualifying for the WSL Final 5: Griffin Colapinto, Ethan Ewing, Molly Picklum, and Caroline Marks. On the men’s side, Griffin Colapinto and Filipe Toledo provisionally qualified for the Olympic Games Paris 2024, joining Ethan Ewing as the highest-ranked surfers for their respective countries.

Overall, the Corona Open J-Bay provided thrilling moments and competitive battles, further fuelling excitement for the upcoming events on the Championship Tour.
