RAIN stole the show at the 2018 French Open once again on Wednesday, but not before the women’s semi-final matchups were sorted.
Garbine Muguruza made short work of a very disappointing Maria Sharapova, dropping a mere three games in little over an hour on court.
The 2016 Roland Garros champion now faces Simona Halep, who rallied from a set down to see off a spirited Angelique Kerber.
The winner of that clash is destined to meet an American in the final, with Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens to lock horns for the first time since their US Open title fight last year.
Simona Halep (1) vs. Garbine Muguruza (3)
Halep – -102.04
Muguruza – -120.48 at Bovada
There are several factors in Muruguza’s favour. She has played only 70-odd minutes of tennis in the last two rounds, whereas Halep spent over two hours on the quarter-final alone. The Spaniard also has four wins from their five previous meetings, including a 6-1, 6-0 blitz in Cincinnati last year. But most of all, Muguruza has been there and done it on the biggest stage – something Halep, for all her ability, has yet to manage.
Madison Keys (13) vs. Sloane Stephens (10)
Keys – +146
Stephens – -181.82 at Bovada
Keys has not dropped a set at Roland Garros 2018, although the unseeded Yulia Putintseva pushed her close on Tuesday. Apart from a scare against Camila Giori in the third round, Stephens has looked every bit as good – if not better – than she did en route to last year’s US Open crown. The hard-hitting Keys is yet to take a set off her fellow American in competitive singles play, and the red stuff doesn’t exactly enhance her chances.
2018 French Open women’s outright odds
+163 – Garbine Muguruza
+175 – Simona Halep
+350 – Sloane Stephens
+650 – Madison Keys
