Masters 2024: Scheffler wins second green jacket in style

Scottie Scheffler claimed his second Masters Tournament on Sunday at Augusta National Golf Club, holding off Swedish youngster Ludvig Aberg to win by four shots.

Scheffler, who finished the week 11 shots under par, becomes just the sixth golfer to win the Masters while ranked number one in the world.

The American started the day one shot in front of his compatriot Collin Morikawa, who dropped four strokes in three holes to crush any chance he had of winning.

Aberg looked as though he would make a charge towards the lead in his first major championship when he recorded birdies on holes seven and nine.

However, Scheffler ramped up his scoring simultaneously with three birdies of his own from holes eight to 10, opening a two-shot lead that could not be chased down.

This is Scheffler’s second win at the Masters in five starts, making him the second-fastest player in the history of the tournament to secure two wins.

Only Horton Smith has achieved the feat quicker, winning the first and third Masters tournaments in 1934 and 1936.

The week at Augusta National began in breathtaking fashion with LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau firing a seven-under 65 to lead Scheffler by a shot on Thursday.

The pair shared the lead with Max Homa at the halfway mark, but DeChambeau slipped out of contention with a three-over 75 in the third round.

Australian hero Cameron Smith finished next best of the LIV Golf participants, bookending the week with rounds of one-under 71 to finish at two-under for the week.

The only other LIV players in contention were Tyrell Hatton (even) and Patrick Reed (+1).

Hatton finished his weekend well with a three-under 69 to tie for ninth, ahead of Reed in a share of 12th.

Tiger Woods made a record 24th cut at the Masters with rounds of 73 and 72 before shooting the worst 18-hole score of his Masters career (82) in round three.

It’s just the third time Woods has shot over 80 in 396 rounds of major championship golf.
