Mathare United will be looking to retain their place atop the Kenyan Premier League table when they play host to Vihiga United this weekend.
The Sunday afternoon encounter will be played at the nation’s capital, with the match being played out at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
Francis Kimanzi’s charges stretched their unbeaten run in the KPL to eight games after overcoming a determined Kakamega Homeboyz side 3-2 at the Kasarani Stadium last Saturday; this despite registering a jittery start to the encounter. The visitors, to Mathare’s surprise, started the match at full throttle, as they caused all sorts of problems from the wings during the opening exchanges.
The Slum Boys were tested and found wanting in the tenth minute as Homeboyz went on to grab the lead through Allan Wanga. The former AFC Leopards stalwart was quick to react to Peter Thiongo’s cutback, as he smashed the leather into the back of the net for the early goal.
Going behind quite early on in the game certainly shook Mathare, as they not only went on to level the score but also took the lead within a period of seventeen minutes. James Kinyanjui did much of the spade work before cutting the ball back to Chrispin Oduor who restored parity with the easiest of finishes in the 20th minute. The Mathare midfielder was at it again three minutes before the half hour mark, as he doubled his account of the day by smashing the ball into the roof of the net; this after Kinyanjui’s shot stung the hands of Homeboyz keeper Gabriel Andika before falling into his path.
Cliff Nyakeya, who had earlier on passed up a goal scoring opportunity, finally took his chance at the 60th minute mark, as he broke clear before putting Mathare in cruised control of the match with an witty finish.
Although Luke Namanda scored in stoppage time for Kakamega Homeboyz, Mathare’s profound reaction to going behind ensured that the Slum Boys secured their sixth win in eight Premier League matches this season; making them the only unbeaten side along with second placed Bandari and Kariobangi Sharks in fifth.
Vihiga United’s midweek clash with Nzoia Sugar at the Bukhungu Stadium was a goalless nonevent, as the Western based club drew their fourth successive League game—making it a staggering six draws in their opening nine games of the current KPL season.
The result as such leaves them eleventh on the log with nine points; an intractable eleven points behind Mathare United who have a game in hand.
Mathare United vs. Vihiga United betting predictions
The 2018/19 Kenya Premier League season is slowly but surely turning out to be an open sprint to the title, seeing as champions Gor Mahia and seasonal favorites AFC Leopards are nowhere to be seen.
Mathare, on 20 points, are two points ahead of Bandari in second, and a further point ahead of third placed Tusker who have already played an extra match. Given the open nature of the title race, Francis Kimanzi will stop at nothing to ensure that his side reaps maximum points this weekend, especially because Bandari have similarly yet to blink in the race for the Kenyan Premier League crown.
