ONE of the hottest college basketball teams in the nation, Michigan State, will ride a 12-game winning streak into its NCAA match-up with the 19th-ranked Iowa on Thursday night.

The sixth-ranked Michigan State crushed Iowa earlier in the season in their house and they beat Iowa last season on the road. The Spartans’ only losses this season have come against Kansas and Louisville, who are both currently in the top 25. MSU has been legit on both sides of the floor on the season and their defense has given up less than 60 points in three of their last four games.

Since being throttled at the hands of Michigan State, Iowa has won 10 of their last 11 games including their last four in a row. They trail the Spartans by three games in the Big 10, as MSU is undefeated in conference play while all of the Hawkeyes losses have come in the Big 10. Iowa is coming off a blowout win where they scored 95 points and in their five-game win streak they have averaged 84.4 ppg.

Michigan was at home in their last game where they got a big W with a 69-55 win over 13th ranked Maryland. The Spartans jumped out to an 11-point halftime lead where they only allowed the Terrapins to score 21 points. They dominated the game from the opening tip and shot a solid 45.9% from the floor while holding Maryland to only 34.4% shooting. The Spartans did not have a great 3-pt shooting game, but they did force more turnovers and only allowed seven free throws.

Four of five starters for Michigan State, and one reserve, went for double figures in the win over Iowa led by Kenny Goins and Cassius Winston, who each went for 14 points. Goins had a double-double in the game as well with 12 rebounds and Xavier Tillman came of the bench to score 10 points and had five blocks and two steals. Winston leads three MSU players averaging at least 15 ppg at 18 ppg and he has been up and down as of late. In his last five games, he has scored at least 23 points three times, but in two of his last three games he has failed score more than 14 points.

In their last game Iowa was at home and they thumped Illinois beating them 95-71. They outscored the Fighting Illinoi by 15 points in the first half, shot a sizzling 68% from the floor, and held Illinois to a FG% of only 39.1%. The Hawkeyes were smoking hot from deep with a three-point FG% of 71.4% burying 15 of their 21 long bombs.

Joe Wieskamp and Isaiah Moss combined for 45 points and they could not miss, almost, from beyond the three-point arc hitting 11 of 12 three-pointers. Luke Garza chimed in for 20 points and the 6’11 C will be counted on to man the lane in this big Bib 10 matchup.

Five players for Iowa are averaging over 10 ppg led by Tyler Cook, who has missed some games lately, but played in the win over Illinois where he only had seven points. Garza ranks second on the team averaging 13.9 ppg and he has totaled 42 points in his last two games.
