Green Bay @ San Francisco NFC Championship betting preview

The Green Bay Packers will hope for a better outcome than their last visit to Santa Clara when they take on the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game this weekend.

In late November the Packers headed west to face the 49ers and were crushed 38-7 as Aaron Rodgers had his worst game of the season. Green Bay have not lost since that game and Rodgers came up big last week in the Packers’ 28-23 win over the Seattle Seahawks.

The 49ers beat the Minnesota Vikings 27-10 in the divisional round of the NFL Playoffs thanks to a stellar defensive display and a strong running game. That has been the blueprint for their season, and it was how they beat the Packers several weeks ago.

In the Packers’ win over the Seahawks last week Rodgers was 16/27 for 243 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. His two late fourth-quarter first downs iced the game for Green Bay. Needless to say, Rodgers has to play better than his last visit to the Bay Area where he passed for a season-low 104 yards and was sacked five times.

Rodgers has not had to do it all this season with a solid defense and the emergence of running back Aaron Jones. The Green Bay pass defense came up big against the Seahawks, pressuring Russell Wilson all game and coming up with key sacks. Jones only had 62 rushing yards at three yards per carry, but Rodgers stepped up and wide receiver Davante Adams tallied 160 receiving yards.

Green Bay and Rodgers have a tall task facing a stout 49ers defense. San Fran rank first in the league against the pass and while rated 17th against the run, they held the Vikings to only 21 yards in their division playoff win.

The 49ers stuffed the run against the Vikings and only gave up 147 total yards. The combination of Tevin Coleman (105 yards) and Raheem Mostert (58 yards) surpassed that figure in rushing yards alone, both averaging a solid 4.8 yards per carry.

San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo passed for 131 yards with a touchdown and a pick in the win over Minnesota. While the Packers need to focus on containing the run game for the 49ers, which is the strength of their offense, they also have to worry about Jimmy G. In the win over Green Bay several weeks ago he passed for 253 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

The Packers rank 14th in the league against the pass and 23rd against the run. That defense had five sacks last week in the win over the Seahawks. If they can repeat that and defend the run well, Green Bay will be in good shape.

Rodgers is the quarterback with more pressure on him in this game, but he will step up. While the 49ers will have a good game on the ground, they will not contain Rodgers like they did a few weeks ago. The Packers will cover the spread, and they may even get the W and advance to the Super Bowl.
