The Pittsburgh Steelers are hanging on to the final AFC playoff spot as they head to the desert to take on the Arizona Cardinals, who have lost their last five games.

Pittsburgh’s Mike Tomlin has to be up there in the Coach of the Year discussion. The Steelers are down to their third-string QB, their top RB has missed a lot of time, and the offense has been less than dynamic, yet the defense has been solid and Tomlin’s charges are still in the hunt for playoffs. The Steelers are tied with the Tennessee Titans at 7-5, but Pittsburgh hold the tiebreaker.

The Cardinals have dropped five in a row and were crushed in their last game, losing 34-7 to the Los Angeles Rams. Rookie QB Kyler Murray had a tough game, getting sacked six times, and Arizona were outgained 549 yards to 198.

The Steelers have won two in a row and six of their last seven games. Their last game ended in a 20-13 win over the Cleveland Browns. Pittsburgh’s defense has only allowed 23 points in their last two games.

On the season the Cardinals are 1-4-1 at home and the Steelers are 2-3 on the road. These teams have not faced off since the 2015 season and the home team has covered the spread in the last five games between them.

Devlin ‘Duck’ Hodges will get another start under center for the Steelers and the third-stringer has won both of his starts thus far. On the season he has passed for 530 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions and in the last game against the Browns he passed for 212 yards with a pick and a score.

James Conner leads the Steelers with only 390 rushing yards and has missed the last two games with a shoulder injury. If he does not pass fit for Sunday then Barry Snell Jr. and Jaylen Samuels, who combined for 95 rushing yards against the Browns, will man the backfield.

Arizona’s defense was lit up in their last game, which is not surprising when they rank dead last in the NFL in pass defense and 24th in run defense. Murray struggled in the blowout loss to the Rams, passing for 163 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. While Arizona had lost their previous three games, Murray played well with seven touchdowns and only one pick. He has not had much help from the run game, as he leads the team in rushing with 446 yards.

Arizona’s second-leading rusher in David Johnson has only 19 rushing yards in his last four games. Kenyon Drake has the fourth-most rushing yards for the team and has been the top back in the last couple of games, rushing for 31 yards at 2.4 yards per carry in the loss to the Rams.

Pittsburgh’s defense is the main reason they are still in the playoff race. The Steelers rank seventh in the league against the pass and 12th against the run, while their overall defensive unit is rated the fifth-best in the NFL.

Steelers vs Cardinals NFL betting picks

Arizona Cardinals +2.5 at -111.11 with Bovada

The Cardinals have lost five in a row, but two of those losses came facing the San Francisco 49ers while another two were against the New Orleans Saints and the LA Rams. They have played a tougher schedule than the Steelers, who have not faced a team with a winning record in their last three games. Arizona and Murray will bounce back in this game and at least cover the spread in their house.
