Roger Federer’s betting odds drift for Wimbledon 2018

Wimbledon Federer

Roger Federer fell in the ATP Halle 2018 final on Sunday, losing to Croatia’s Borna Coric.

The loss appears to have caused some sportsbooks to lengthen the odds on Federer to win the 2018 Wimbledon title. Sportsbet.com.au, for example, had Federer at +150 in Wimbledon outrights at the start of Sunday and closed him at $2.70 at day’s end.

But the loss in Halle need not deter those that are looking to back Federer. It’s important to note that the Swiss Maestro was playing Coric on uneven terms in regard to fatigue.

Federer was very active last week in the ATP Stuttgart draw. He won the title there through Milos Raonic, Nick Kyrgios, and two other players.

At that time, Coric was inactive and that meant that when Federer and Coric met in the Halle final, the former was playing in his ninth match in just 12 days.

That’s a tough haul for any ATP player. Coric, conversely, was playing in just his 5th match over the same time frame. He had, in fact, been idle on tour since the third round of the French Open.

In short, Federer was probably a lot more fatigued than Coric heading into the Halle final.

It’s true that Federer will have to put two weeks of solid tennis together to win the title at the All England Club. However, in the late rounds of that tournament, he won’t play players that rested while he laboured.

It all actually means that those that are partial to Federer for Wimbledon should be happy with the developments of Sunday. They can now get the Swiss Maestro at longer odds than before.

But those that aren’t betting their favourite player but are just looking for value could still look at Coric. Regardless of why he won, the victory in Halle will get the 21-year old’s confidence going sky-high as he picked up his first career grass-court title. It’s not like Halle is a weak stop on tour: it’s part of the 500-series.

With a win over third-ranked Alexander Zverev in Halle additional to the victory over grass-court champ Federer, Coric should turn a bunch of heads. That’s especially the case at 80 to 1 with betway for the Wimbledon title, odds that have to be called maybe even four times too long.
