Sunday’s MLB betting picks & best value bets – July 24, 2022

Yankees’ All-Star Nestor Cortes starts in Baltimore, St. Louis All-Star Miles Mikolas takes on the Reds, and Miami All-Star Sandy Alcantara takes the mound against the Pirates in Major League Baseball (MLB) on Sunday. Here are the best bets on MLB games scheduled for Sunday, July 24th starting at 12:05 p.m. Eastern.

New York Yankees @ Baltimore Orioles

The Yankees have won 12 of Nestor Cortes’ 17 starts. He’s gotten wins in seven of those games, logging 99 strikeouts and a top-10 ERA (2.63). He didn’t get much run support in a five-inning, shutout start against Baltimore in April. The Yankees were shutout themselves, 5-0. Cortes struck out 12 over those five innings, which is incredible. He’s allowed just nine hits to Baltimore in 59 plate appearances, but three have gone for homers, making for a .925 OPS against despite a .231 batting average against.

Dean Kremer has allowed an almost identical OPS against the Yankees (.924), albeit in a smaller sample size. He’s allowed twice as many hits as Cortes despite that smaller sample size, though. Aaron Judge is three-of-four with two homers, so bet on him to have multiple total bases and maybe even a homer.

Take New York in the first five innings, on the moneyline, but stay away from betting the spread. The Yankees have covered roughly half the time Cortes has started (9-8). St. Louis Cardinals @ Cincinnati Reds

Tyler Mahle is coming off the injured list to start for Cincinnati on Sunday. Before going on the injured list, he was 3-7 with a 4.48 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. In one start against St. Louis this season, he allowed two earned runs but only last 4.1 innings. The Reds lost 5-0.

Going for St. Louis will be All-Star Miles Mikolas, who is 7-7 despite a 2.54 ERA and 0.96 WHIP. He’s top-10 in both ERA and WHIP, so the lack of run support for him this season is a bit astounding. He won’t need much support on Sunday, however. Against the Reds he’s allowed just 15 hits in 76 at-bats, with seven going for extra bases, and five of those going for homers. It’s still only a .150 batting average and .492 OPS against, however. Even Joey Votto only has five hits in 24 at-bats against him.

Miami Marlins @ Pittsburgh Pirates

All-Star Sandy Alcantara might be the best pitcher in baseball. He’s 9-4 with a 1.76 ERA (2md) and 0.90 WHIP (4th). His 123 strikeouts ranks ninth overall. But the most impressive thing about him is the length of his outings. Alcantara has gone all nine innings three times, eight innings six times, and seven innings five times. He’s only failed to complete five innings one time all season, and he’s already pitched 138.1 innings, which is most in the majors. Against Pittsburgh, he’s allowed 10 hits in 34 at-bats, but just three have gone for extra bases. That’s a .647 OPS against.

Countering for Pittsburgh will be Mitch Keller, who is 3-7 with a 4.55 ERA and 1.46 WHIP. He has limited the Marlins to just seven hits in 32 at-bats, with just two going for doubles. But Keller has only completed six or more innings in six of his 16 starts. The Pirates’ relievers rank third-worst in WHIP (1.41) and second-worst in ERA (4.71).
