Sheffield United vs Manchester United betting odds and tips

EPL betting tips

The usual roles are reversed this week as Manchester United head to Yorkshire to take on newly promoted Sheffield United in the English Premier League.

The Red Devils only have themselves to blame, as a string of lacklustre performances at one point saw them positioned closer to the drop zone than they were to the top of the table. Nonetheless, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been able to counter the decline by inspiring his side to five wins in their last six matches in all competitions. Their last victory came right before the November international break where United beat Brighton & Hove Albion 3-1 at Old Trafford to climb to seventh on the table with 16 points.

Manchester United’s trip to Bramall Lane is the kind of match that will help decide whether they deserve a Champions League place, given how Sheffield United have stolen points from several of the top English sides. Both Chelsea and Arsenal have dropped points against the Blades this season, while the likes of Leicester City and Liverpool had to dig deep to emerge with marginal wins over Chris Wilder’s side.

Sheffield further enforced themselves as the EPL’s surprise troublemakers by sharing the spoils with Tottenham Hotspur right before the international break, with the 1-1 draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium proving to be Mauricio Pochettino’s last game in charge as manager.

Those strong displays against established teams have catapulted the Blades to fifth place in the EPL standings on 17 points, ahead of Arsenal on goal difference and a point above Manchester United.

Sheffield United team news

Chris Wilder has few injury problems to deal with, with John Egan and his calf complaint the only concern on that front.

The Blades will be without one of their star performers, however, as on-loan goalkeeper Dean Henderson is unable to play against his parent club.

That means a likely recall for Simon Moore, who was the first-choice glovesman before Henderson arrived at Bramall Lane in 2018.

Manchester United team news

Ole Gunner Solskjaer has a number of injury concerns to contend with ahead of this weekend’s tricky fixture.

United look poised to start yet another match without Paul Pogba, who is still recuperating from an ankle injury, while Scott McTominay looks certain to miss the encounter due to an ankle injury suffered during the win over Brighton.

The defensive trio of Eric Bailly, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Diogo Dalot will also miss the trip to Sheffield as they continue to recover from various injuries, but Luke Shaw, Axel Tuanzebe and Nemanja Matic could be available this weekend.

Marcus Rashford goalscorer odds and tips

• Rashford to score any time – +150 at Bovada
• Rashford to score/Man United to win – +250

Marcus Rashford is Manchester United’s leading goalscorer this season, having found the back of the net nine times in all competitions. Six goals of those goals have come in his last seven games, marking a significant uptick in form after a rough patch early in the campaign. He also found the back of the net twice for England during the international break, so he looks the best bet to penetrate Sheffield United’s stubborn defence.

Sheffield United vs Manchester United betting tips

Sheffield United have one of the most impressive defensive records in the Premier League. Chris Wilder’s side has conceded just nine goals thus far, only one more than Leicester’s league-best record of eight goals against.

Manchester United are not bad at the back either, as they have the fourth-best defensive record in the league. Although United also have a talented attacking line, with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Daniel James injecting pace upfront, the Red Devils have laboured to break down tough defensive teams, as was witnessed during their loss away to Bournemouth.

There is a good chance that United will be tested at times, but the Old Trafford outfit has what it takes to leave Sheffield with maximum points.
