Sofapaka will welcome Bandari to the Kenyatta Stadium on Sunday afternoon in what will quite assuredly be the most explosive encounter in the Kenyan Premier League this weekend.
Both sides were off to a flying start on the opening week of the 2018/19 KPL campaign, as they secured thrilling wins over Mount Kenya United and Gor Mahia respectively.
K’Ogalo fell at the first hurdle, as they were subjected to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bandari on the opening day of the season. Playing away at the coastal city of Mombasa, the current SportPesa Premier League champions went behind right at the stroke of half time through William Wadri.
Yema Muama lifted an accurately delivered cross into the area; one on which the Uganda striker guided into the back of the net to hand supporters at the Mbaraki Stadium a much deserved lead. The hosts then went on to set up a comfortable two-goal cushion ten minute after the restart courtesy of David Kingatua who capitalized on a rare howler by Gor defender Philemon Otieno.
Otieno torpidly passed the ball back to goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch, but the Harambee Stars defender didn’t get proper contact on the back pass; allowing Kingatua to spring onto the loose ball before sending it agonizingly past goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch from close range.
Mayienga—who camped in Bandari’s half during the final stages of the game—were able to force in a goal in the 75th minute through substitute and new signing Nicholas Kipkurui; albeit after an almighty goalmouth melee.
The Dockers were nonetheless able to keep a cool head in the face of great adversity, as they held on to the lead to hand the 17-time league champions a shocking start to their title defense. Bernard Mwalala’s side has now beaten Gor Mahia in their last two matches, although K’Ogalo could take consolation from the fact that they still didn’t have a head coach, and that the match was only played a matter of hours after their arrival from Malawi where they beat Big Bullets FC in the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.
Sofapaka equally won by a similar outcome as they beat Mount Kenya United (previously known as Nakumatt F.C.) 2-1 last weekend. John Avire, who previously had a stint at the club, haunted his former side as he scored the opener with a diving header moments before the break.
Skipper Stephen Waruru converted from the spot to double the lead eight minutes into the second half after Kepha Aswani was felled in the area by Franco Balabala—nevertheless with the faintest of touches.
MKU halved the deficit in the 78th minute through Amani Kyata who converted a penalty of their own, but Batoto Ba Mungu hanged on for dear life to collect all three points on the opening day of the season.
Sofapaka vs. Bandari betting predictions
Bandari finished last season second on the log with 62 points, nine points ahead of Sofapaka in fifth. Promoted to the top division in 2012, the Dockers have become a household name in the SportPesa Premier League, and will as such give the flamboyant 2009 KPL champions a run for their money in Sunday’s fiery encounter.
