South Africa clinch win over Pakistan to seal WTC final spot
After a thrilling victory over Pakistan in the first Test Cricket at Centurion, South Africa has secured their spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
The Proteas, chasing a modest target of 148 on the fourth day, secured a memorable win, but not without moments of intense drama.
Starting the day at 27/3, the heavy betting favorites, South Africa appeared in control as Aiden Markram (37) and Temba Bavuma (40) added crucial runs early in the innings.
However, a sudden collapse saw four wickets fall in quick succession, shifting the momentum in Pakistan’s favour.
With just two wickets remaining and 49 runs still required, Marco Jansen (16*) and Kagiso Rabada (31*) came to the rescue.
Known more for their bowling skills, the duo demonstrated remarkable composure under pressure, forming an unbeaten 51-run partnership to secure their team’s victory.
“Quite an emotional moment for me,” Bavuma said after the game.
“It was a good advert for Test cricket. A lot of joy and happiness on our side, but it was also a bit of a rollercoaster.
Today was a testament to the character of not just this group but the South African cricketing spirit.”
Pakistan captain Shan Masood expressed pride in his team’s effort but lamented missed opportunities that could have changed the result.
“We had the game by the scruff of the neck,” he said.
“We had them eight down twice. Even with the bat, we could have extended our score in the first innings. But going forward, we need to be ruthless. That’s what we have to do to compete and be among the top teams in the WTC.”
The result leaves South Africa as the first confirmed finalist for the WTC decider in June.
Their opponent is yet to be determined, with Australia, India, and Sri Lanka still battling for the second spot.
