A little over a week ago we took a look at American tennis hopefuls for Wimbledon 2018.
At that time, Frances Tiafoe of the United States looked like a player with some potential. With some fresh results in mind, Tiafoe has looked strong since he was tipped earlier this month.
The young American is in the 500-level grass-court Fever Tree Championships in London. The tournament itself represents a significant prize for Tiafoe. However, it is also a part of his Wimbledon tune-up.
Tiafoe is through two rounds of the tournament and into the quarterfinals for later this week. He enjoyed a straight-sets victory over Jared Donaldson in round one. In the second round, Tiafoe beat Leonardo Mayer.
Next up is Jeremy Chardy, a player whose best tennis may be history. Tiafoe will be looking for a spot in the semis of London with prospects after that can’t be discounted.
Other Americans that are doing well this week are both Sam Querrey and Denis Kudla. Querrey is under some pressure to do well in the weeks ahead to avoid a ranking slide. He stands to lose some 720 ranking points for his Wimbledon semifinal appearance last year if he is not sharp on the grass courts. Querrey is also into the quarters in London while Kudla is a surprise quarterfinalist in Halle.
Tiafoe remains a longshot at +19900 many sportsbooks, including Bovada. Punters, especially partisan American ones, should fancy a sprinkle at that price. Querrey at +14900 with Bovada is acceptable as well as the big server appears to be shaking off a poor season. Both are worth monitoring as results come in later this week.
