This week, the fight capital of the world is infused with a distinct Aussie flavour as UFC 290 takes centre stage. Five Australians and a Kiwi are set to grace the Octagon in this weekend’s pay-per-view card, headlined by the featherweight title defence of Alex Volkanovski against Yair Rodriguez.
Among the exciting matchups, former middleweight champion Rob Whittaker looks to earn a third bout with Israel Adesanya as he takes on South African fighter Dricus du Plessis. Additionally, Jimmy Crute is set for a rematch with Alonzo Menifield, while Jack Della Maddalena faces a late-notice opponent change. Shannon Ross enters his second UFC fight, and Dan Hooker from New Zealand goes head-to-head with Jalin Turner in what promises to be an exhilarating clash.
The Anzac Takeover, comprised of these six fighters, kicked off fight week with a scorching photo shoot at the iconic ‘Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas’ sign. Battling temperatures as high as 43 degrees, the fighters, trainers, and managers made their mark on this popular tourist spot, mingling with visitors, autograph seekers, and even a wedding party.
“It’s important to embrace the tourist experience. Despite visiting Las Vegas many times, I’ve never had the chance to see the sign,” shared Volkanovski.
“It’s fantastic that we’re all gathered here for this monumental card. The event is always huge, and having a representation from our side of the world is pretty special. It’s a significant moment for Australia and New Zealand.”
Della Maddalena almost missed out on the photo opportunity due to an unforeseen circumstance. His original opponent, Sean Brady, withdrew just days ago due to an elbow infection. Undeterred, Della Maddalena put out a call for a replacement in the welterweight or middleweight divisions, willing to take on any challenger on short notice.
As one of the most avoided fighters at 170 pounds, finding a replacement within ten days proved challenging. However, Della Maddalena accepted the UFC’s shortlist of names without hesitation, without even checking their records.
“I’ve come too far to not have a fight,” said the determined fighter, standing beneath the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign.
“I was prepared to face anyone. The UFC was supportive and offered me a fight in either division or a new signing. And that’s exactly what they did.”
His mysterious opponent is Josiah ‘Muscle Hamster’ Harrell, an undefeated fighter with a 7-0 record and training alongside UFC veteran Matt Brown. Although Della Maddalena had no prior knowledge of Harrell, footage of Harrell’s viral moment, tackling an opponent through the cage door, quickly surfaced.
Nevertheless, Della Maddalena remains undaunted, aiming to dispatch Harrell swiftly before turning his attention to a rematch with Brady in Sydney at UFC 293 in September.
“He’s undefeated at 7-0, but I’ll be the first to hand him a defeat. I just need to maintain distance. Brady is a shorter fighter, so I’ll avoid grappling and focus on landing significant strikes. The game plan remains similar.”
“I’m grateful to have an opponent and I’m determined to secure my fourth consecutive bonus.”
Get ready for an unforgettable week of fights as Las Vegas plays host to the Anzac Takeover, where passion and athleticism will collide in an epic showcase of talent and determination.
