There is no legal sports betting in Louisiana and there are no sportsbooks at any of the casinos in the state.

However, in May of 2018 the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act and this opens up the door for legal sports betting on a state-by-state basis.

Louisiana would tax and regulate sports betting in the state and it could really help the state out financially.

There was a bill in March of 2018 that would have made sports betting legal, on a smaller basis, at the racinos in the state.

However, the bill did not move forward and as of mid-July there are no laws on the books dealing with sports betting.

The only option currently to make wagers on sports is to do so online, but, again, residents will be taking a risk considering it is illegal.

Betting on horse racing in Louisiana

Horse racing is legal in Louisiana and the sport has a rich history in the state.

The Fair Grounds Race Course was established way back in 1852 and still hosts some of the biggest races in the state such as the Louisiana Derby, Silver-Bullet-Day Stakes, New Orleans Handicap, and the Bayou Breeders’ Cup Handicap.

A few of the other bigger tracks in Louisiana are Harrah’s Louisiana Downs Race Track, Evangeline Downs, and Delta Downs. Many of the racetracks are also racinos meaning they have other gambling games mainly slots and video poker.

Online is where you will find the most horse racing action, but with the stance on online gambling in the state that can be a dicey situation. Still, many online racebooks will offer tons of races from all over the world, have no lack of bets to make, and offer bets in a wide range of stakes.

Online Poker in Louisiana

Harrah’s New Orleans and Coushatta Casino are the two casinos that offer the most poker tables and they can also be found at the other casinos throughout the state.

Many of the places that have poker rooms are pretty small and there are not a ton of games or tournaments available. Also, the stakes are also limited meaning you may not find the stakes you want to play. Just like all other online gambling in the state residents do so at their own risk in Louisiana.

There are online poker rooms that are legitimate and accept wagers from U.S. residents. These poker rooms have tons of games available, many tournaments, no lack of types of poker action, and have a very wide variety of stakes.

Online Gambling Laws in Louisiana

In 1940 the Louisiana Racing Commission was established in order to oversee the sport in the state as well as rid the sport of corruption, which was rampant at the time. The commission also deals with the wagering for horse racing making sure the tracks are compliant with the state’s rules and regulations. In 1991 the Louisiana was approved as were the first 15 riverboat casinos. In 1997 a Louisiana law was passed that explicitly banned online gambling.
