The Los Angeles Lakers will look to open their account in the 2019-20 NBA season on Friday night when they take on the Utah Jazz at the Staples Center.

Utah won its first match over the OKC Thunder by scoring well in the paint and in transition, where Donovan Mitchell led the way with 32 points.

Kawhi Leonard and the LA Clippers overpowered the Lakers in their season opener with their efficiency, as the Clippers’ forwards were too classy.

LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Danny Green combined for 71 points, but the other Lakers were unable to make a solid contribution.

Utah houses a very well-balanced team surrounding Mitchell, who acts as the main scorer, leaving multiple avenues to score on each possession.

Kyle Kuzma is still out for the Lakers as he recovers from an ankle injury, but Rajon Rondo is a chance as he trained in the lead-up to the game.

Scoring from beyond the arc will be the key to this match as the Lakers were abysmal against the Clippers besides Green, who hit 7/9 on the night.

If the Jazz can get hot, unlike their OKC win where Mike Conley shot 0/6, there is every chance they can trouble the Lakers in their own house.

The Lakers will be coming off a three-night break whilst the Jazz will have one less night of rest, but that will not matter much at this early stage of the season.

Donovan Mitchell over 28.5 points
When faced with the defensive tenacity of Chris Paul and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Mitchell ended with 32 points against the Thunder and shot 14/22 from the field. The Lakers do not have a guard that can efficiently defend both the perimeter and the paint, two places where Mitchell can attack. Now that he has been given the all-clear to run offense and shoot when ready, the rising Jazz star will be one of the league’s most damaging scorers.

LeBron James over 35.5 points + rebounds
It would be fair to say LeBron was disappointing in his opening match, but he still put up 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. It was his shooting that completely ruined his match, going 7/19 from the field and a very poor 1/5 from three-point land. If the king wants to keep his throne he will need to shoot more efficiently and continue to grab rebounds, which is the big bounce-back he will produce against the Jazz.

The Jazz only put up 100 against the short-handed OKC Thunder, when they could have capitalized on their developing bench and scored far more. The Lakers also only put up 102 points, but that was because the Clippers are capable on the defensive end. The Utah defense runs on a similar level to the Clippers and will be very hard to score against, especially when facing Rudy Gobert, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.

They have a super-talented duo in LeBron James and Anthony Davis, they just need to shoot slightly more effectively from outside the paint. If Danny Green can shoot the way he did on opening night, only a handful of teams will beat the Lakers this season.
