World Surf League reveals thrilling 2024 Championship Tour schedule

The World Surf League (WSL) has just unveiled its exciting schedule for the 2024 Championship Tour (CT), promising a thrilling season for surfing enthusiasts worldwide. The upcoming year will witness a packed calendar featuring nine regular-season events, a Mid-season Cut, and the eagerly anticipated WSL Finals. A significant highlight of the 2024 CT is the return of Fiji as the final regular-season stop, marking its first appearance on the tour since 2017.

The 2024 CT journey will commence on January 29th at the iconic Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii, followed by breathtaking stops in Sunset Beach, Peniche, Bells Beach, and Margaret River. The Mid-season Cut will trim the field down to 24 men and 12 women, setting the stage for the next exhilarating phase.

Surfing fans can look forward to an exciting Tahiti showdown in May, serving as a preview ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where surfing will make its second appearance. The surfers will then venture to El Salvador and Brazil before the Olympic break.

Cloudbreak, Fiji, is the final regular-season stop, and it promises to be a highlight of the tour. Known for its awe-inspiring left-hand barrels and challenging waves, Cloudbreak will determine the surfers who make it to the WSL Final 5.

2024 World Surf League CT Tour and Dates

The grand finale of the 2024 CT will take place at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California. Here, the top five men and women surfers will vie for the prestigious World Titles in a winner-takes-all format from September 6th to 14th. The location’s ideal timing for Southern Hemisphere swells adds to the excitement.

The 2023 WSL Finals recently broke viewership records, with over 10.7 million video views in a single day, demonstrating the sport’s growing popularity. The 2024 season is expected to continue this momentum, with surfers competing on some of the world’s best waves.

Due to the Paris 2024 Olympics, there will be a break in July to allow qualified athletes to prepare in Tahiti. This adjustment means that J-Bay and Surf Ranch will not feature in this year’s schedule. The Tahiti event has been moved to May, offering fans a last opportunity to witness the world’s best surfers in action at Teahupo’o before the Games.

WSL Chief of Sport Jessi Miley-Dyer expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming season, emphasizing the significance of the Fiji return and the continuation of the Finals at Lower Trestles. With the Olympic Games as a monumental stage, the WSL has adapted the schedule to ensure surfers can deliver their best performances in 2024.

As the 2023 season concluded with Caroline Marks (USA) and Filipe Toledo (BRA) securing the World Titles and 18 surfers qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics, the focus now shifts to the WSL Challenger Series, where surfers will vie for a spot on the 2024 CT. The Corona Saquarema Pro Presented by Banco do Brasil will follow the EDP Vissla Pro Ericeira Presented by Estrella Galicia, with a competition window from October 14 to October 21.
