Lucknow Upset Mumbai as Pandya heroics fall short

Hardik Pandya took 5/36 and made 28, but it wasn’t enough as Lucknow beat Mumbai by 12 runs in a high-scoring IPL contest in Lucknow.

Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow Super Giants pulled off a narrow 12-run win over Mumbai Indians on Friday night in Lucknow, withstanding a vintage all-round performance from MI captain Hardik Pandya to collect their second win of the 2025 IPL season.

Pre-match, LSG were the longest shot on the board across cricket betting sites, but the result has flipped the market yet again.

Mumbai — who opened the tournament as title favorites — have now dropped to the fourth line of betting at +700 with Nags.bet after losing three of their first four games.

LSG, meanwhile, shorten to +1200 with the top online sportsbooks after rising off the bottom of the table.

Sent in to bat, Lucknow got off to a flying start as Mitchell Marsh (60 off 31) and Aiden Markram (53 off 38) piled on a 76-run opening stand.

The momentum wobbled in the middle overs after both fell in quick succession, and key contributors Nicholas Pooran (12 off 6) and Rishabh Pant (2 off 6) also failed to fire.

But Ayush Badoni (30 off 19) and David Miller (27 off 14) lifted the total past the 200 mark, finishing on 8/203.

Pandya was the pick of Mumbai’s bowlers, taking 5/36 to keep the damage from spiraling.

In reply, MI lost Will Jacks (5) and Ryan Rickelton (10) early, both falling to catches in the deep off Ravi Bishnoi’s bowling.

That brought Naman Dhir (46 off 24) and Suryakumar Yadav (67 off 43) together for a vital 69-run stand.

Suryakumar continued to push the pace alongside Tilak Varma (25 off 23), and with Pandya chipping in a brisk 28 off 16, Mumbai appeared well placed heading into the final four overs.

But a clutch spell from the Lucknow bowling unit – highlighted by Suryakumar’s dismissal in the 17th over – saw the tide turn again.

The hosts held firm at the death, closing out a tense finish with some pinpoint execution under pressure.

“Mentally tough game,” Pant said post-match.

“They didn’t lose a lot of wickets and kept on going, but we kept our calm and finished the game.

“The start Marsh gave helped the lower middle capitalise. When you get a good start, you’re always ahead of the game.”

The result lifts Lucknow to sixth on the ladder at 2-2, one spot ahead of Mumbai, who now sit seventh with just one win from four.
