England will be hoping to regain some pride when they face South Africa in Southampton’s West End this Sunday in the final ODI of their three-match series.
The Proteas secured the series victory on Thursday, when they won a thrilling contest at Lord’s by five runs. Batting first, South Africa set an impressive 330, led by 85 from Matthew Breetzke and 58 from Tristan Stubbs.
In response, the English looked set to chase down the total with Joe Root, Jacob Bethell and Jos Buttler all passing 50. But late wickets killed their momentum as they fell agonizingly short.
With the series decided, expect heavy rotation from both squads for the third ODI. As a result, it is no surprise to see top cricket betting sites have the home side as favorites for this clash at -149.25. Meanwhile, backing the South Africans to secure the sweep is at +120.
After a disappointing effort so far, England should look to rest some key players before the T20 series.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Banton is a chance to come in, while all-rounders Jamie Overton and Rehan Ahmed may also be given a chance.
Expect Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse to be rested given their injury history, which should see Sonny Baker given a recall despite his poor performance on debut.
England’s predicted XI:
In a similar situation to their tour of Australia, expect the Proteas to give their squad players an opportunity in this clash with nothing on the line.
While their batting lineup should stay largely the same, expect pace duo Lungi Ngidi and Nandre Burger to be rested. This opens the door for the likes of Kwena Maphaka, Wiaan Mulder and the untried Codi Bosch.
South Africa’s predicted XI:
While South Africa are playing for nothing, expect England to bounce back as players fight for their position in the side. We saw Australia produce a record performance in a similar situation a couple of weeks ago; with similar levels of firepower, the home side are a chance for the same result.
English opener Ben Duckett has had a horror series so far, with scores of 5 and 14. However, when he is up and running, the 30-year-old is one of the most damaging players in the world. Prior to the series, Duckett had passed 50 in six of his last 11 matches, so back him to pass the mark again at +165 with major online bookmakers.
South African opener Aiden Markram has had an excellent series. After a match-high 86 runs in the first game, he produced 49 on Thursday. With a weaker bowling attack expected for this final clash, back the vice-captain to continue his excellent form with another half-century at +170 odds.
