Wednesday’s MLB betting picks & top props – August 3, 2022

MLB best bets

On Wednesday in Major League Baseball (MLB), the Mets visit the Nationals, the Tigers get the Joe Ryan Experience in Minnesota, and Freddy Peralta and the Brewers get comfortable in Pittsburgh. Here are the best bets on MLB games scheduled for Wednesday, August 3, starting at 12:10pm ET.

New York Mets (-215) @ Washington Nationals (+185)

Chris Bassitt has absolutely confused the Nationals, allowing 12 hits in 47 at-bats with just four extra-base hits. That’s a .432 OPS and .180 batting average against. Nelson Cruz has three of the Nationals’ four doubles against him over just 14 at-bats, so consider placing a player prop bet on him to have multiple total bases on Wednesday.

Anibal Sanchez is expected to start for Washington, and he is yet to get a win this season (0-3, 7.47 ERA, and 1.40 WHIP). The Mets are more than familiar with him, as is much of the league. In 110 at-bats, Mets batters have 26 hits, including six doubles and five dingers. That’s a .788 OPS and .264 batting average against. Pete Alonso is five-for-nine with a double and two dingers, so bet on him to have multiple total bases in this one.

Take the Mets in the first five innings, on the moneyline, and to win by two or more runs.

Detroit Tigers (+185) @ Minnesota Twins (-215)

The Twins will have their first chance to use newly acquired closer Jorge Lopez if they have a lead over Detroit on Wednesday. There is a good chance that will be the case with Joe Ryan starting. He is 7-4 with a 3.78 ERA and 1.11 WHIP, and against Detroit he’s been great. The Tigers have just nine hits in 42 at-bats with just two doubles and a triple. That’s a .647 OPS and .249 batting average against.

Expected to serve as an opener for Detroit is Tyler Alexander, who went four innings in his latest outing, allowing three runs (two earned) in a losing effort at Toronto. He has been good against the Twins, allowing 11 hits in 37 at-bats with just one going for extra bases. That’s .540 OPS and .238 batting average against, but since Alexander won’t likely go five innings, this game will come down to the Tigers having the worst team OPS in baseball (.620) despite having a top-10 bullpen (1.20 WHIP). The Twins have the fifth-best OPS (.740) and a middle-of-the-pack bullpen that just got considerably better.

Consider taking Detroit in the first five innings, but bet on Minnesota to win on the moneyline. Parlaying the Twins and Mets together pays +114 with Bovada.

Milwaukee Brewers (-190) @ Pittsburgh Pirates (+160)

Freddy Peralta is expected to start for Milwaukee, and he’s already pitched the Brewers to a win over Pittsburgh this season. He completed six innings and allowed no runs while striking out seven in a no decision. The Brewers have won four of his last five starts and five of eight overall. That’s despite Peralta’s 4.42 ERA, which is higher than his 1.19 WHIP should allow. He has obviously been the victim of some bad luck at home. On the road, however, he’s been lights out. In 20.2 innings pitched, Peralta has allowed just five earned runs and a .178 batting average.

Countering for Pittsburgh will be Zach Thompson, who is 3-8 with a 5.09 ERA and 1.48 WHIP. The Brewers are 2-1 against him this season, scoring 10 runs over 13.1 innings pitched. They have 15 hits in 53 at-bats, with two doubles and three dingers. That’s a .272 batting average and .826 OPS against. Five Brewers have more than one hit off Thompson, with Christian Yelich going three-for-six with two doubles and a dinger. Consider placing a prop bet on him to have multiple hits and multiple total bases on Wednesday. Thompson has failed to complete five innings against Milwaukee in all three starts.

Pittsburgh’s third-worst bullpen (1.41 reliever WHIP) will be subjected to the Brewers’ seventh-best offense (.737 team OPS). Take Milwaukee in the first five innings, on the moneyline, and to win by two or more runs. Parlaying the Brewers, Twins, and Mets in a moneyline trifecta pays +227.
