Anderson achieves landmark feat in farewell Test at Lord’s
England’s James Anderson has become the fourth bowler, and the first seamer, in Test cricket history to bowl 40,000 deliveries.
The 42-year-old is playing in the Lord’s Test — the first of a three-match series between England and West Indies, and the final Test in Anderson’s illustrious 188-match career.
Muttiah Muralitharan, Anil Kumble and Shane Warne were the only members of the 40,000 club before Anderson.
Anderson leaves a stellar legacy behind
Anderson is set to retire as the most successful seam bowler of all time in the longest format of international cricket.
As of the second day at Lord’s, he has claimed 703 wickets in Test matches for England.
He is the first pace bowler to pick up 50 wickets against all other major Test-playing nations.
Anderson also remains the only seamer to have taken more than 300 wickets in front of his home faithful.
The ‘King of Swing’ chose Lord’s for his swan song, where he had a record-breaking haul of 119 wickets.
After two days of the match against the West Indies, he has added another three to his tally, bringing his total to 122.
England favourites to win big in Anderson’s grand finale
England are firmly in control after the second day of the Test against the West Indies and look set to wrap up the match before the final day.
The hosts require four more wickets to register an innings win against the Caribbean side.
After a quickfire 371 with the bat, Ben Stokes’ men strangled the West Indies batting line-up with an immaculate bowling display.
The visitors could only amass 121 runs in their first innings before slumping to 79/6 in their second.
The fall of Jason Holder, who scored 20 off 59 balls, on the final delivery of the day further dimmed the already fading hopes of a West Indies resurgence.
Joshua de Silva and Alzarri Joseph will be walking out of the pavilion on the third day, knowing their side needs 171 runs more just to make England bat again.
Online bookmakers now have England at unbackable odds of -100000 to take a 1-0 series lead, with a West Indies win (+4000) and the draw (+6600) both paying huge money.
