Betway is among the latest brands to secure an internet gaming operator license in the Canadian Province of Ontario.
The company received its permit from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) on Tuesday, making it the 30th operator to get okayed by the Commission since the jurisdiction opened its legal online casino and sports betting market. The industry went live on April 4, with a dozen well-known brands like Unibet, PointsBet, LeoVegas, Bet365, 888, Caesars, FanDuel, BetMGM, and BetRivers rolling out operations on the first day.
The license issued to Betway has a two-year validity and will run until April 18, 2024. The permit allows the Super Group-owned company to offer online sports betting and iGaming services to players in the Province under the Betway.ca brand. Live casino gambling, esports betting, and virtual sports are also covered by the license.
However, the operator is still required to meet a few regulatory requirements including entering into an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario (iGO) before launching its offering in the jurisdiction.
iGaming Ontario is the body tasked with regulating private online gaming operators in the province.
Betway grows North American footprint with Ontario license
Receiving approval from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario is a big milestone for Betway as the company continues to work on expanding its footprint in North America.
Ontario is Canada’s largest province in terms of population, and experts project that its legal online gambling market could generate over $1 billion in gross gaming revenue in the first year.
As Betway prepares to enter the jurisdiction’s regulated mobile sports betting and online casino space, Super Group is optimistic that the province will be a key market given the brand’s popularity in the Great Blue North. A recent report published by Morgan Stanley earlier this week shows that Betway was the fourth most downloaded gaming app in the province since April 4, after theScore Bet, Bet365, and FanDuel.
The platform has been operating under the grey in Canada and the country is currently its biggest market, according to Super Group. The brand has also reported massive success in the US where it is currently operational in six states including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Arizona, Indiana, Colorado, and Iowa.
ComeOn also receives approval to enter Ontario
ComeOn is also set to launch in Ontario. The company received its license from the AGCO on Thursday, allowing it to operate a mobile sportsbook and online casino platform in the jurisdiction until April 22, 2024.
The company is the 31st operator to get approval from the Commission, and the 12th operator to receive a two-year license. The majority of licensees have permits valid for 12 months only.
ComeOn is an established online gaming brand in the international internet gambling scene. The operator is licensed in several European markets including Sweden, Malta, the United Kingdom, and Poland.
Like Betway, the company still has a number of regulatory hurdles to clear before going live in Ontario. The province will the brand’s first regulated market in North America.
Besides Betway and ComeOn, 14 more operators are also in the process of clearing with iGaming Ontario after receiving registration by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission.
Only 15 companies have successfully met the standards set by both regulatory authorities so far and are fully approved and registered to operate gaming platforms in the province. They include 888, Bet365, Bwin, BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars, Coolbet, FanDuel, LeoVegas, Party, PointsBet, Rivalry, RoyalPanda, theScore Bet, and Unibet.
