Cricket: Bangladesh win in Kingston to end Test series 1-1

Test cricket

Bangladesh defeated the West Indies on Tuesday in the second Test between the two sides, ending the series in a 1-1 draw with a 101-run win in Kingston.

The victory was sealed by Taijul Islam’s 5/50 on day four, after the visitors set the West Indies a target of 286 runs to win.

The Bangladeshi spinner removed four of the host’s top five batsmen to leave them in hot water at 143/5.

Once captain Kraigg Brathwaite (43) and Kavem Hodge (55) were out, the remainder of the West Indies’ lineup offered little resistance, with the remaining five wickets falling for 42 runs.

“This win was in unfamiliar conditions,” Taijul said after being announced player of the match.

“Everyone gave a good effort, and the boys were dedicated to getting the win.

“The pace and spin attack we have, we’ve been playing well, everyone’s in good rhythm, so definitely we can compete against any batting attack.”

Cricket bookmakers had the West Indies as pre-match favourites to win the final Test of the series after the prevailed by 201 runs in North Sound last week.

But Brathwaite highlighted that their batting was not up to scratch in the second Test.

“Not at the level we know we can be,” he said.

“Young guys, in terms of playing Test cricket, and obviously it is important to learn as you play.

“But in pressure situations it is about executing better.

“Our execution could be a lot better in terms of our batting, during attacking shots especially.

“Once we get that right, this group can do great things with the bat.

“As a group, having intent in both innings is something we need to improve.”

Bangladesh will continue their tour of the West Indies with three ODIs and three T20Is over the next fortnight.

Top sportsbooks are yet to release their cricket betting odds for Sunday’s 50-over clash in Saint Kitts, though the hosts are expected to start as favourites.
