India favourites in Border-Gavaskar Trophy odds after Perth win

Cricket betting sites have drastically adjusted their odds for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy following India’s heavy victory over Australia in the first Test in Perth.

After winning by 295 runs on Monday, India are now -125 favourites to win the five-Test series across top bookmakers. Ahead of the opening match, the visitors were at +300 to claim the series.

Australia’s odds, meanwhile, have lengthen from -227.27 to +162, reflecting their poor performance in Perth.

Having rolled India for 150 in their opening innings, Australia seemed set to live up to the initial bookmaker odds.

However, an inspired Indian bowling attack then bundled the hosts out for 104 before piling on 487/6 declared to take a 533-run lead.

In their second attempt, Australia only managed 238 before being bowled out, with quicks Jasprit Bumrah (3/42) and Mohammed Siraj (3/51) again devastating the home side’s top order.

“We were put under pressure in the first innings, but the way we responded was great,” Bumrah said after the match.

“I played here in 2018, I remember the wicket started soft.

“This one was less spicy; we were really well prepared.

“I told everyone to keep faith in your ability.”

The result — India’s third-largest win away from home — has given the tourists confidence for the rest of the series.

“I think that going further will help us in good snares because, as I said, this is a tough place to play cricket,” Bumrah said.

“You will be put under pressure.

“When you respond to pressure, that gives you a lot of confidence going further in your career.”

Australian captain Pat Cummins admitted that his side had “a fair bit to look at” after the defeat, which has resulted in Australia relinquishing the No.1 spot on the World Test Championship table.

“Fairly disappointing,” he said on Monday.

“Prep was good, all firing, fair bit to look at as lots didn’t go right.

“Gap is what it is.

“You want to get on the horse, but we will take a couple of days’ rest and get training in Adelaide.

“We didn’t give ourselves a chance in a few different facets, like the finish on day one with bat.

“There’s a lot of experience in the side, they’re going about it well, there will be lots of conversations on what we can do better in same conditions.”

Although the Aussies trail in the series odds, Bovada has them as -120.48 favourites to win the second Test in Adelaide, which starts on Friday, December 6.
