MLB Friday best bets & top parlay picks – May 27, 2022

MLB best bets

As the weather gets warmer and warmer things in the Major League Baseball will get better and better. With the MLB season already over a quarter of the way done for some teams, we might begin to see some teams who are underachieving make some pretty drastic moves in an attempt to save their season, but that’s a little bit down the road a bit. May and June are really the time to see who are pretenders and who are contenders.

There have surely been more than a fair share of surprises thus far this season and we can only imagine it getting crazier and crazier. Here are some of our favorite picks for Friday, May 27th slate of games.

Philadelphia Phillies (+1.5, +100 ML) @ New York Mets (-1.5, -120 ML)

Probable pitchers: Zach Eflin vs Carlos Corrasco

It seems like the Mets and Phillies have already played each other enough times, in fact, these two teams after this series will have already played 12 of their 19 games by the end of May and will not see each other again until mid-August. The Mets have had the Phillies number this season and really, the number of the MLB. The Mets enter this matchup tied for the National League lead in wins with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Despite missing both Jacob DeGrom and Max Scherzer currently, they have still kept pace with the top teams in the league. It seems like back to back busy offseasons are finally paying dividends for New York.

The Phillies on the other hand, have also had back to back busy offseasons but are still waiting for the fruit to bloom. On paper, the Phillies lineup looks to be unstoppable but thus far they have been inconsistent and hard to watch at times. The Phillies are really being hurt by their bullpen for what seems to be the tenth season in a row but also by their manager Joe Girardi. Girardi’s in-game moves have made little sense at times and it’s unclear whether or not he will survive the season if the Phillies continue at their current pace. The Phillies have floated around the .500 mark but have yet to maintain any real momentum thus far.

The good news for the Phillies is that they have Zach Eflin on the mound who has looked very good at times this season. Eflin has always had the ability that he is pitching to now, but has seldom been healthy for the Phillies. Eflin is coming off perhaps his best start of the season, setting a new career high in strikeouts, He will be opposed by Carlos Corrasco who has been just fine for the Mets this season. With the exception of one bad start against the Cardinals in which he allowed eight earned runs in less than four innings pitched, Corrasco and the Mets staff as a whole have been pretty good.

These are two teams that already know each other very well. We’re going to ride with the momentum and take the up and down Phillies moneyline in this one.

Pittsburgh Pirates (+1.5, +170 ML) @ San Diego Padres (-1.5, -200 ML)

Probable Pitchers : Jose Quintana vs Sean Manaea

The Padres have been great this far and it isn’t really being talked about as much as it probably should. Since firing Jayce Tingler and hiring a proven commodity in Bob Melvin, the Padres look to be reaching their potential this year, all without Fernando Tatis Jr who is slated to come back around the All Star break. Manny Machado is playing at an MVP level for the Padres who are second in their division behind the almighty Dodgers. For as good as their division is, it’s the Padres who are keeping pace.

The Pirates on the other hand have seen better days. While they haven’t been as bad as many people have expected, it still looks like they’re in for a long season as they sit with an 18-25 record. The Padres are favored in this one and for good reason.

While Sean Manaea has certainly pitched better in his career, he’s still a threat on any given night. Manaea has proven himself to be somewhat of a streaky pitcher if such thing exists. It’s not uncommon for Manaea to find his command and shut down opposing lineups. If the Padres can get the Manaea that he was in years past with Oakland and Tatis comes back, they could very well leapfrog the Dodgers.

For the Pirates, Quintana has been very good and has shown flashes of his previous self on multiple occasions this season highlighted by him shutting a deadly Dodger lineup down with two hits in six innings. We think this game is going to be close and who knows, maybe the Pirates can steal one. Take the Pirates money line if you’re feeling risky but the Pirates +1.5 seems like a safe bet here.
