Delhi Capitals delivered a major blow to Chennai Super Kings’ title hopes on Saturday night, securing a 25-run victory at Chepauk to claim their first win in Chennai in 17 years — and push CSK to the bottom line of IPL title betting.

KL Rahul anchored Delhi’s innings with a composed 77 off 51 balls, guiding the visitors to 183/7 on a pitch that offered little assistance to aggressive stroke play.

Despite entering the match as $1.80 favourites with the top online sportsbooks, CSK failed to fire in the powerplay — a trend that has plagued them across the first month of the 2025 IPL season.

Delhi lost Jake Fraser-McGurk for a duck in the opening over but recovered through Rahul, who batted into the 20th over, finding support from Abishek Porel (33 off 20), Axar Patel (21 off 14), and a pair of explosive cameos from Sameer Rizvi (20 off 15) and Tristan Stubbs (24 off 12).

The Capitals’ 183 looked competitive on a slow surface, and live odds quickly swung in their favor as Chennai’s top order collapsed under pressure.

CSK’s chase never gained momentum, with Rachin Ravindra (3), Devon Conway (13), and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (5) all dismissed inside the first five overs.

Shivam Dube (18) and Vijay Shankar (69* off 54) attempted to steady the innings, but it was MS Dhoni (30* off 26) who added late fireworks, though the game was out of reach by the time he found his rhythm.

Gaikwad, speaking post-match, acknowledged the team’s struggles during the powerplay.

“Powerplay is definitely a concern for us – in both batting and bowling,” he said.

“I just think that we are over concerned or tentative about who’s coming on to bowl in the powerplay, and we’re losing a wicket in the first or second over.

“We’re trying our level best in all three departments, but it’s just not happening.”

Delhi’s win breathes new life into their season, while CSK’s campaign is now on shaky ground.

Once second-favourites at +500 to win the title, Chennai have now drifted to the bottom of the market at $15 with Nags.bet after dropping three of their first four matches.

CSK’s next fixture is a must-win, as the five-time champions try to arrest their early slide and stay in touch with the playoff contenders.
