The reasons New Jersey will quickly adopt sports betting

The wait is finally over as the United States Supreme Court has finally scrapped the ban on sports betting.
With this, betting companies are set to make a move with Darby Development, the operator of Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, New Jersey revealing it may be taking bets in time for this month’s NBA finals. Eventually this ruling will lead to a fully-fledged sports betting industry, with many NJ-based betting sites.
The Chair and CEO of Darby Development, Dennis Drazin said he was very happy with the decision and announced his readiness to take wagers in the next two weeks.
However, New York is yet to make a decision with Governor Andrew Cuomo saying, “I wouldn’t expect anything this year” in New York.
In 2013, Cuomo gave an approval to four new upstate casinos pending receiving a license from the state Gaming Commission to take sports bets provided the ban on sports betting be lifted. Nonetheless, after the Supreme Court strikes out the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, 1992, that banned sports betting last Monday, he claims the four casinos still need approval for lawmakers to be able to take bets.
“I don’t see any way short-term that they can do it without legislative action,” Cuomo said.
But the chair of the Assembly Committee on Racing and Wagering, Assemblyman Gary Pretlow has a different opinion.
“We put it in the hands of the Gaming Commission, but that’s already in law, so they can theoretically start tomorrow. The Gaming Commission can set up regulations within the parameters of what we’ve already done, and they can go to it.”
The spokesperson for the commission, Brad Maione, said, the commission is reviewing Monday’s decision to determine its implications for the state of New York.
John Bonacis who introduced a bill last March to include a move to legalise sports betting at racinos and off-track betting parlors expressed optimism.
“I am confident that working together with my colleagues in both the Senate and Assembly, we can have a bill ready for governor’s signature by the end of the session [June 20].”
