Houston’s Justin Verlander hosts Glenn Otto and the Rangers, San Francisco’s Sean Manaea starts against the Giants in San Diego, and Arizona’s Madison Bumgarner hosts the Pirates in Major League Baseball (MLB) on Wednesday. Here are the best bets on MLB games scheduled for August 10, starting at 1:10pm ET.
Texas Rangers (+250) @ Houston Astros (-300)
Justin Verlander has been every bit as good as he was two years ago. At 39 years old, he has basically made every MLB hitter look about as good as a pitcher hitting. Verlander is 15-2 with a 1.73 ERA and 0.85 WHIP, allowing just a .188 opponent batting average over 130 innings this season. The Rangers have managed 10 hits in 48 at-bats this season with none going for extra bases. That’s a .208 batting average and .412 OPS against.
Countering for Texas is Glenn Otto, who is 4-8 with a 5.31 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. He has allowed a .266 opponent batting average this season, and the Astros have been even better against him. Houston hitters have 11 hits in 40 at-bats with a double and a dinger for a .275 batting average and .745 OPS against. Houston also has the best bullpen ERA behind Verlander (2.68).
Don’t overthink this one. Take Houston in the first five innings, on the moneyline, and to win by two or more runs.
Houston Astros to win
San Francisco Giants (+135) @ San Diego Padres (-155)
Sean Manaea’s switch to the National League hasn’t gone smoothly, but that is generally the case. His 4.74 ERA is the highest of his career and almost a run higher than it was last year with Oakland. His 1.32 WHIP hasn’t been higher except for his sophomore season back in 2017, when it was 1.40. Manaea has been good against the Giants, though. In 43 at-bats this season, the Giants have nine hits, including two doubles and two dingers for a .209 batting average and .666 OPS against. Most of that damage has been done by one player, however. Darin Ruf is three-for-five with a double and two dingers, so bet on him to have multiple total bases on Wednesday.
The Giants are expected to start Jakob Junis, another pitcher amidst his debut season in the National League. Junis, however, has fared much better than he did with Kansas City the last five years. His 3.05 ERA is the best of his career. San Diego has roughed him up a bit, going seven-for-24 this season with a double and a dinger. That’s a .292 batting average and .750 OPS against.
Take the Padres in the first five innings and on the moneyline. Their bullpen WHIP ranks ninth in MLB. Parlaying the Padres with the Astros on the moneyline only pays around +119 with most betting sites, so you might want to add another leg or two.
San Diego Padres to win
Pittsburgh Pirates (+160) @ Arizona Diamondbacks (-190)
Madison Bumgarner is 6-10 with a 3.96 ERA and 1.39 WHIP, and lately he has struggled. He’s allowed 10 runs over his last two starts against Atlanta and Colorado. Bumgarner is considerably better at home than on the road, with a 3.31 ERA in home games and 4.88 ERA in road games. Against Pittsburgh in his career he has allowed a .246 batting average and .663 OPS, and these Pirates have the third-worst offense in baseball (392 runs scored and .650 team OPS). Arizona has the 20th-ranked offense (458 runs scored and .693 team OPS) and also the better bullpen.
Mitch Keller is expected to start for Pittsburgh, and he is 3-8 with a 4.21 ERA and 1.42 WHIP. The Diamondback have never seen him, so he will have unfamiliarity on his side the first time through the lineup. For whatever reason, Keller’s ERA in night games is way higher than it is in day games (4.92 vs 3.28). This one will be under the lights in Arizona, so bet on the Diamondbacks in the first five innings and on the moneyline. Parlaying Arizona, San Diego, and Houston on the moneyline pays +234 with Bovada.
Arizona Diamondbacks to win
