Wednesday’s MLB betting picks & top prop bets – August 17, 2022

MLB best bets

Every Major League Baseball (MLB) team is in action on Wednesday, with Max Scherzer and the Mets visiting Jake Odorizzi in Atlanta, Cal Quantrill starting against the Tigers in Cleveland, and Carlos Rodon scheduled to take the mound in San Francisco against the Diamondbacks. Here are the best bets on MLB games scheduled for August 17, starting at 12:35pm ET.

New York Mets (-105) @ Atlanta Braves (-115)

The line in this one is closer than it ought to be. Jake Odorizzi has been pretty good for the Braves this season but he hasn’t handled the Mets all that well. The Mets are 26-for-103 with a .288 batting average and .676 OPS against him. Francisco Lindor got familiar with Odorizzi during his time in the American League Central, going 11-for-28 with four doubles and two dingers. Bet on him to have multiple total bases and maybe multiple hits on Wednesday. He has six of the Braves’ eight extra-base hits.

Max Scherzer, on the other hand, has been great this season and holds a strong record against the Braves. He is 8-2 with a 1.93 ERA and 0.93 ERA. Against Atlanta he has allowed just 39 hits in 186 at-bats for a .155 opponent batting average and .452 opponent OPS. Marcell Ozuna has been most comfortable in the batter’s box, going 12-of-47 with six doubles and two dingers against Scherzer. You might consider betting on him to have multiple total bases in this one.

The Braves have a slightly better bullpen, so they should keep it close in the late innings, but take New York in the first five innings and on the moneyline.

Detroit Tigers (+185) @ Cleveland Guardians (-215)

Cal Quantrill is expected to start for Cleveland against Detroit, and he has been money for the Guardians as of late. Cleveland has won each of his last seven starts, including one versus Detroit in which Quantrill pitched six shutout innings. Two weeks prior to that, however, he allowed three earned runs (six total) over four innings in Detroit. To give you a sense of how little that bad start affected his overall numbers against Detroit, the Tigers are just 24-of-83 with four doubles and a dinger against Quantrill. That’s a .236 batting average and .571 OPS. Miguel Cabrera is seven-for-12 against Quantrill, so consider betting on him to have multiple hits in this one.

Countering for Detroit will be Daniel Norris, who is 0-4 with a 5.97 ERA and 1.44 WHIP. Just five Guardians have seen Norris before, but two of them have found considerable success. Josh Naylor is two-for-two with a double and Jose Ramirez is eight-for-23 with three doubles. You might consider betting on either to have multiple total bases on Wednesday.

Take the Guardians in the first five innings and to win the game. Parlaying Cleveland with the Mets on the moneyline pays just +186 with Bovada, so consider adding another leg.

Arizona Diamondbacks (+140) @ San Francisco Giants (-165)

Carlos Rodon has won his last three starts for San Francisco and enters Wednesday’s game against Arizona with an 11-6 record, a 2.95 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP, and the fourth-most strikeouts in baseball (168). Arizona has struggled mightily against him, going eight-for-53 with two doubles and three dingers for a .182 batting average and .699 OPS against.

Zach Davies is expected to start for Arizona, and the Giants have been quite comfortable at the plate against him. Seven San Francisco batters have multiple hits off Davies, with the team amassing 25 hits in 85 at-bats for a .275 team batting average. Seven of those hits have gone for extra bases, making for a .727 team OPS against Davies. Brandon Belt is four-of-eight with a double and a dinger, Wilmer Flores is three-for-seven with a triple, and Tommy La Stella has six hits in 18 at-bats against Davies. Do with that information what you will.

Take San Francisco in the first five innings and on the moneyline. A moneyline trifecta featuring the Giants, Guardians, and Mets pays +282.
