Saturday’s IPL action sees the struggling Sunrisers Hyderabad host the in-form Punjab Kings at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
With SRH languishing at the bottom of the ladder and Punjab surging towards playoff contention, the two teams find themselves heading in very different directions.
Sunrisers Hyderabad started their 2025 campaign with a statement win over Rajasthan but have since lost four straight games. Their latest defeat, a seven-wicket drubbing at the hands of Gujarat Titans at home, exposed both batting frailties and bowling inefficiencies.
Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, who were expected to fire at the top, have underwhelmed, and the rest of the batting order has failed to pick up the slack.
Even with Heinrich Klaasen’s dependable middle-order contributions, Hyderabad’s inability to build or defend strong totals is worrying. Their bowling attack, led by Pat Cummins and Mohammed Shami, has struggled to contain opposition batters, regularly conceding over eight runs an over.
Punjab Kings, on the other hand, are growing in confidence after notching three wins from their first four matches. Priyansh Arya’s blistering century and Arshdeep Singh’s dependable spells have given the Kings an edge.
Captain Shreyas Iyer has also led from the front, scoring 168 runs so far, and despite a rare failure against CSK, he’ll be hungry to bounce back.
Historically, SRH have dominated this fixture, winning 14 of the 21 meetings and six of eight at home. But form often trumps history—and Punjab’s current momentum makes them the more dangerous outfit heading into this clash.
Punjab come into this game with the better form and more reliable players across all departments. Their batting unit has consistently gotten off to strong starts, and their bowlers have shown the ability to take wickets at crucial junctures. With SRH low on confidence and winless in four games, Punjab should account for SRH and despite being -116.28 with top online bookmakers, they look a great price.
Despite back-to-back low scores, Shreyas Iyer remains Punjab’s most composed batter and is still among the league’s top scorers. He’s produced two half-centuries already and has been dismissed just twice in four innings. Against an SRH bowling lineup that’s lacked bite, Iyer looks poised for a return to form as PBKS top runscorer in this clash.
Hyderabad’s top-order woes have become a pattern. In four of their last five matches, they’ve lost their first wicket inside 20 runs. With Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma both short of runs and Punjab’s pace attack sharp early, SRH will do well to escape without a wicket falling early.
