Wednesday’s MLB betting tips & parlay picks – July 13, 2022

Headlining the Major League Baseball (MLB) on Wednesday is Shane McClanahan of the Rays playing host to the Red Sox, Chris Bassitt and the Mets go to Atlanta and face Charlie Morton, and Shohei Ohtani starts for the Angels against the Astros. Here are the best bets on MLB games scheduled for Wednesday, July 13th starting at 12:05 p.m. Eastern.

Houston Astros (+110) @ Los Angeles Angels (-130)

Houston has the fourth best team OPS in all of baseball, but Shohei Ohtani is a different beast. The All-Star pitcher/hitter has held Houston hitters to 13 hits in 69 at-bats for a .427 OPS. Just four of those 13 hits have gone for extra bases.

The Angels haven’t been very effective against Astros’ starter, Christian Javier, however. They’re eight-of-48 with just three extra-base hits. That’s a .429 OPS and .122 batting average. Ohtani has two of those extra-base hits, both homers. In 11 at-bats, Ohtani has three hits, so bet on him to have multiple total bases on Wednesday. Somehow Mike Trout is 0-for-6 against Javier. Perhaps he’s due.

Unfortunately for Los Angeles, the Astros have the fourth-best offense in baseball (.753 OPS), and second-best bullpen (1.11 WHIP). Consider taking Los Angeles in the first five innings of this one, but take the underdog Astros on the moneyline. Parlay those bets with…

New York Mets (+115) @ Atlanta Braves (-135)

Going for the Braves will be Charlie Morton, who is 5-3 with a 4.21 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. He’s managed to miss plenty of bats, striking out 108, which is top-10 in MLB. He’s been especially effective against the Mets. New York batters are just 20-for-113 with four extra-base hits for a .405 OPS and .152 batting average.

Chris Bassitt counters for the Mets. He’s 6-6 with a 3.94 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. While he’s been good this season, he hasn’t been good against the Braves, who are 10-for-36 with a double and a dinger against him. That’s an .852 OPS and .318 batting average. The Braves also have the better bullpen. Their relievers have the seventh-ranked WHIP, while the Mets are 12th.

Expect the Braves to lead after five innings and to hold that lead. Bet on the Braves. Parlaying Atlanta with Houston on the moneyline pays +265 with Bovada.

Boston Red Sox (+130) @ Tampa Bay Rays (-150)

Shane McClanahan is 9-3 with a 1.73 ERA (2nd in MLB) and 0.81 WHIP (2nd in MLB. He leads MLB in strikeouts with 141, and he’s handled the Red Sox lineup rather well. In 54 at-bats, Boston batters have just 14 hits, with two extra-base hits (both doubles). That’s a .653 OPS against McClanahan for the seventh-best offense in MLB (.740 team OPS).

Boston will start Josh Winckowski, who is 3-3 with a 4.35 ERA and 1.52 WHIP. Only Christian Bethancourt has seen him, so Winckowski will have unfamiliarity working for him the first time through the Rays’ lineup, which has the 22nd-ranked OPS in MLB. The Rays do have an excellent bullpen, however. They rank ninth in WHIP amongst relievers. Boston’s bullpen has the 13th-ranked WHIP.

Take Tampa Bay in the first five innings and on the moneyline. Parlaying Tampa Bay with Houston and Atlanta pays +509.

Detroit Tigers (+105) @ Kansas City Royals (-125)

Jonathan Schoop is five-for-13 with a triple and a homer against Royals’ projected starter Brady Singer, and Harold Castro is six-for-13 with a double. Consider placing a player prop bet on either or both to have multiple total bases on Wednesday.

Also consider taking Detroit in the first five innings and on the moneyline. The rest of the Tigers have experienced success against Singer (.752 OPS over 101 at-bats), and the Royals have struggled against Tigers starter Tarik Skubal (.658 OPS over 82 at-bats). Detroit also has the eighth-best bullpen based on WHIP (1.19), while Kansas City has the worst in all of MLB (1.51). Parlaying Detroit with Tampa Bay, Atlanta, and Houston pays +1148.
