FEDEX Cup leader Dustin Johnson heads an all-star cast this week in the Northern Trust at New Jersey’s Ridgewood Country Club.
The world number one survived a sudden-death playoff with Jordan Spieth to win this event last year, so it is no surprise to see him top the outright betting on +900 at Bovada.
Reigning FedEx Cup champion Justin Thomas shares a +1200 quote with Brooks Koepka, who is fresh off an impressive victory at the PGA Championship.
Back in the playoffs for the first time since 2013, the resurgent Tiger Woods is paying +1400 alongside 2015 Northern Trust winner Jason Day.
Spieth, Jon Rahm and Justin Rose (all +1800) round out the top contenders in a field that is missing some of the game’s biggest names.
Sergio Garcia won this event twice when it was known as the Buick Classic, but the former Masters champion hasn’t done enough to reach the top 125 in the FedEx Cup rankings.
Rickie Fowler and Henrik Stenson are both out with injuries, while Rory McIlroy has opted to skip the trip to the Garden State.
That could open the door for those who need a few strong results to bolster their Ryder Cup chances.
USA captain Jim Furyk will keep a close watch on the likes of Woods, Phil Mickelson, Brandt Snedeker and Zach Johnson, while European hopefuls Rafa Cabrera Bello, Paul Casey and Ian Poulter will be eager to catch the eye of Thomas Bjorn.

Best bets for the Northern Trust
Even before the days of the FedEx Cup, this was always an event where the biggest stars shone brightest. Stick to the certified guns in the outright betting – especially those who have a good record at Ridgewood – and look for value in the minor placings with players whose form lines are trending upward. These are our top picks.
Jason Day to win – +1400 at Bovada
Even though he is spraying the ball all over the place, Day has won twice this year and gone close on several more occasions. The burly Queenslander is one of five Australians to have won this event, and he was only two shots off back in 2014 when Hunter Mahan triumphed at the same venue. If the tour’s top putter plays true to form, he will be there or thereabouts again.
Brooks Koepka to finish top five – +260 at Bovada
The bigger the occasion, the better this guy gets. Along with major wins at the US Open and the PGA, Koepka finished tied for 11th at the Players Championship and went top five in both of his starts in the World Golf Championships this year. The form is there and the stats are too, so it would be foolish not to include him somewhere among your betting slips this week.
Francesco Molinari for top European – +500 at Bovada
There is a strong Euro contingent in the field this week, but it is impossible to ignore Molinari’s form. The Italian’s last five starts on the tour have produced two wins (including a major breakthrough at the Open), a second place at the John Deere Classic and a top six at the PGA Championship. Indeed, you could do much worse than back him for the win at +2200.
Billy Horschel to finish top 20 – +275 at Bovada
After a rough start to the season, Horschel has picked a good time to find his groove. The 2015 FedEx Cup winner has really lifted his game since the end of June and was near-flawless from tee to green en route to a tied-11th finish at the Wyndham Championship last time out. There is value to be had in backing him to make the top 20 for the fourth time in six starts.
