Hillside Sports and Hillside Gaming, both owned by gaming giants Bet365, have been fined SEK65 million and SEK14 million respectively by Spelinspektionen for inadequate player protection measures.
Spelinspektionen stated that Bet365‘s Hillside Sports and Hillside Gaming lacked sufficient player protection measures, including the failure to set deposit limits or review player behavior when excessive gambling was suspected. The regulator noted that this resulted in inadequate consumer protection.
Spelinspektionen found Hillside Sports responsible for allowing three individuals to lose significant amounts of money without implementing necessary checks. Hillside Gaming also committed similar breaches, allowing players to lose large sums without setting deposit limits.
Hillside Sport violated regulations by allowing a player to lose SEK287,263 without setting any deposit limits. Another player at Hillside Gaming deposited 61 times, surpassing their monthly limit of SEK250,000, and lost SEK73,730. A third player deposited 105 times, withdrew only once, and lost SEK104,512.
The regulator identified serious deficiencies in both companies’ approach to consumer protection. Spelinspektionen criticized the length of time it took for Bet365’s Hillside Sports and Hillside Gaming to implement adequate measures and the lack of clarity in the proposed course of action. The breaches in player protection measures occurred between October 17, 2021, and December 17, 2021, with the regulator citing specific cases as the basis for the penalty.
