All eyes heading into the AFC Championship Game are on Patrick Mahomes. After suffering a concussion in last Sunday’s win over the Cleveland Browns, Mahomes is currently listed as questionable heading into this Sunday. With or without Mahomes, the Chiefs will host the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game.

Kansas City took a 19-3 lead into halftime against the Cleveland Browns and appeared to be well on its way to a comfortable victory. Instead, Chiefs fans received a scare when superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes was knocked out of the game with a concussion and Cleveland pulled to within five points with over 11 minutes still left in the clock. But with backup quarterback Chad Henne leading the offense, the Chiefs held on for a 22-17 victory. The Chiefs improved to 24-2 straight up over its last 26 games with the win but fell to 0-8-1 against the spread over their last nine games after failing to cover the spread as 8-point sportsbook favorites.

Buffalo’s defense was sensational in a 17-3 victory over the Baltimore Ravens last Saturday. The Bills held Lamar Jackson to just 34 rushing yards on nine carries and to only 162 passing yards with no touchdown. The defense also manufactured a 101-yard interception return in the third quarter to break the game open and secure the win for Buffalo. But despite how good Buffalo is, this game really feels like it boils down to how healthy Patrick Mahomes is. Mahomes has taken the lion’s share of the reps at practice this week which indicates that the team believes he will be ready to play in the AFC Championship Game.

If Mahomes doesn’t clear concussion protocol, the Bills will win this game. And even if Mahomes plays and is less than 100%, the Bills are good enough to take advantage. Kansas City’s coaching staff says Mahomes has looked like himself at practice, but is this all gamesmanship? It’s just too difficult to say. The safe play is on the Bills, who we know are healthy and good enough to pull off this upset. But I’m going to go with my gut here and say that Mahomes plays and is healthy enough to get the job done.
