Australia v South Africa match preview

Australia and South Africa will both be looking to go top of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy table when they clash in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.

Both sides kicked things off with big wins last week, and the victor of this clash will stand alone at the summit of Group B. Top cricket bookmakers have the Australians as slight favourites at -138.89, with the Proteas paying +110.

On Saturday night, Australia pulled off the biggest chase in Champions Trophy history to beat England by five wickets. Set 352 to win on a flat deck in Lahore, the two-time champions ended up getting home with 15 balls to spare — largely thanks to wicketkeeper Josh Inglis and his unbeaten 120 from 86 balls.

South Africa had a much easier opening fixture, as they beat Afghanistan by 107 runs. Opener Ryan Rickelton was the difference, scoring 103, while fast bowler Kagiso Rabada took 3/36.

This is the first ODI at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium since 2023, but historically it is a batter-friendly pitch. With two strong batting sides, expect there to be plenty of runs.

Australia v South Africa team news

After a couple of positive results, don’t expect too many changes for either side.

The Australian batting lineup looks set after such a strong performance. However, they may look to rotate the bowling attack, with Sean Abbott a chance to replace Spencer Johnson, who struggled in the opener.

South Africa had four batsmen pass 50 in their opening game, while every bowler took a wicket, so expect the side to remain unchanged.

Australia v South Africa predictions

While doubts remain around the Australian bowling lineup, their batting against England shows they are still one of the top sides in this competition. South Africa were impressive in their opener, but given they had lost their previous six ODI matches, there are doubts around their ability against top sides. In what should be a shootout, back Australia to have too much quality as -138.89 at Nags.bet.

One positive for the Australians against England was the performance of left-arm seamer Ben Dwarshuis, who took 3/66. With two wickets inside the first six overs, the 30-year-old was strong with the new ball, while he also performed well at the death to keep the runs down. Known for his swing bowling and slower-ball variations, back Dwarshuis to continue his strong form with two wickets at +150 with Nags.bet.

Despite playing just seven matches of ODI cricket for South Africa, Ryan Rickelton looks like an incredibly talented prospect. Coming off his maiden century in the opening game, the 28-year-old has now scored more than 35 runs in four of his past five innings. With favourable batting conditions expected, there is another excellent opportunity for Rickelton to score 50 or more runs at +225 with Nags.bet.
