Novak Djokovic has brought in a surprising addition to his coaching team for the upcoming Australian Open, enlisting former rival Andy Murray.

The partnership marks a new chapter in their storied relationship, with Djokovic acknowledging the unusual but rewarding dynamic.

“Being on the same side of the net is actually great for a change because he’s been one of my greatest rivals,” Djokovic said during a press event in Brisbane.

“In a way, it was strange for me to share all these kinds of insights… what I’m going through, what I’m thinking about, how I see my game with somebody that has always been one of the top rivals.

But I’m so glad and very thankful that he has accepted to work with me here in Australia.”

Murray, who retired from professional tennis in August 2024, joined Djokovic’s team after the Serbian endured a challenging season.

For the first time since 2017, Djokovic failed to secure a Grand Slam title, with motivation proving difficult to maintain.

The pair spent 10 days training together ahead of the Brisbane International, and Djokovic had high praise for Murray’s approach.

“The 10 days that we spent together were terrific. I enjoyed every bit of it,” he said.

“He’s very meticulous, he’s very dedicated, so professional. It doesn’t surprise me because I’ve known him so many years as a player.”

The collaboration has already started to bear fruit, with Djokovic highlighting Murray’s unique perspective.

“He has a unique perspective on my game as one of the greatest rivals that I’ve had,” he noted.

“He knows the pros and cons of my game. He also knows all the other best players currently in the world, the youngsters and the weaknesses and strengths in their game.”

Djokovic is optimistic about the impact Murray can have on his performance, especially as he eyes his 100th ATP title at the Brisbane International and another Australian Open crown.

“I think he’s bringing a fresh look to my game, and I think I’ll be able to benefit from that, no doubt, on the tennis court.

But also that kind of champion’s mentality that he has, I’m sure that we’ll match very well.”

Djokovic will kick off his Brisbane campaign against Australian wildcard Rinky Hijikata, with sports betting sites heavily favoring the Serbian to claim his milestone 100th title.

Meanwhile, his Australian Open journey begins on January 12, where he’ll compete as one of the tournament’s top contenders.
