English Premier League clubs have taken the initiative and voted on Thursday morning to ban shirt-front advertisement sponsorships by gambling companies.
In a bid to avoid the government banning gambling sponsorships outright, 18 clubs out of the 20 in the football league voluntarily voted to relegate the sponsorship, while two abstained.
The league announced in a statement that after consulting with the government, it decided to end sponsorships with gambling companies starting from the 2025/2026 season. This will leave clubs like Bournemouth, West Ham and Everton looking for new sponsors.
“Premier League clubs have today collectively agreed to withdraw gambling sponsorship from the front of clubs’ matchday shirts, becoming the first sports league in the United Kingdom to take such a measure voluntarily in order to reduce gambling advertising,” the statement read.
“The announcement follows an extensive consultation involving the League, its clubs and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport as part of the Government’s ongoing review of current gambling legislation.
“The Premier League is also working with other sports on the development of a new code for responsible gambling sponsorship. To assist clubs with their transition away from shirt-front gambling sponsorship, the collective agreement will begin at the end of the 2025/26 season.”
The move is coming after the UK Government announced it will be publishing the much awaited gambling white paper that is expected to change UK’s gambling industry.
In order to still retain a form of partnership with gambling companies, clubs will still be allowed to advertise sports betting and casino operators on their shirt sleeves.
While teams in the Big Six are not affected, other teams will have to find new partnerships with the biggest constraint being finding sponsors that will pay as much as the gambling companies do.
