Round 17 of the 2025 Formula 1 season lands in Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and it’s Max Verstappen who somehow kept his cool during a wild, red-flag-riddled qualifying session to take pole position. The Dutchman delivered under immense pressure after a marathon two-hour qualifying session, which saw six red flags and multiple accidents.
The Grand Prix is set to get underway at 3pm local time in Baku (AZT) / 9pm AEST Sunday, and after Saturday’s madness, the race has all the ingredients for another street circuit thriller.
Qualifying in Baku was nothing short of carnage. From crashes to changing weather and barrier repairs, it had everything — and after nearly two hours, Max Verstappen emerged from the chaos with pole position for Red Bull.
But the real shock came behind him. Carlos Sainz pulled off a stunning lap early in Q3 while the track was at its driest, vaulting his Williams into P2 — easily his best qualifying performance of the year. Liam Lawson joins him on the second row in P3, backing up Racing Bulls’ growing street circuit reputation.
Things went from bad to worse for McLaren in Baku. Oscar Piastri crashed during Q3, damaging his car and bringing out one of the session’s many red flags. He will start P9 — a costly mistake in the context of the Drivers’ Championship.
But if Piastri had a rough day, Lando Norris will be kicking himself even more. The Brit had a golden opportunity to close the gap to his teammate in the standings but completely bottled it in Q3. A messy final run leaves him P7 on the grid and stuck in traffic on a track that punishes impatience.
Max Verstappen leads the market with top sportsbooks after a dominant qualifying session in Baku, while McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are in the mix. Carlos Sainz is the surprise package from P2 on the grid.
