French Open Day 8 best bets & top value picks – May 29, 2022

Novak Djokovic will look to continue his dominance in the 2022 French Open with a fourth round matchup against Diego Schwartzman this Sunday. We’ve got a play in that matchup and a pair of WTA picks for Aliaksandra Sasnovich vs. Martina Trevisan and Sloane Stephens vs. Jil Teichmann in this Sunday’s French Open best bets for Day 8.

Novak Djokovic vs. Diego Schwartzman

Novak Djokovic didn’t drop a single set en route to a victory at the Italian Open prior to the French Open, and he’s off to a perfect start in this tournament as well with straight set victories over Yoshito Nishioka, Alex Molcan and Aljaz Bedene. Diego Schwartzman hit a few rough patches in the first two rounds including falling into a two-set deficit in his match against Jaume Munar, but he did look very sharp in a 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 win over Grigor Dimitrov on Friday.

Djokovic is nearly unstoppable when he’s in a zone like the one he’s currently in. And while Schwartzman is a solid player, Djokovic owns a 4-0 lifetime record in head-to-head matches against Sunday’s opponent including three straight wins without dropping a set. With Djokovic’s odds to win in straight sets listed at only -150 against Schwartzman, we’re happy to bet on the defending French Open champion to keep things rolling.

Aliaksandra Sasnovich vs. Martina Trevisan

Aliaksandra Sasnovich is dialed in at this year’s French Open. She overcame a one-set deficit to defeat Emma Raducanu 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the second round and followed that up with another dominant performance in the third round, beating Angelique Kerber 6-4, 7-6. Martina Trevisan hasn’t dropped a set in this tournament coming off of a 6-3, 6-4 win over Daria Saville, and including her win in the Morocco Open this month she is riding an eight-match winning streak.

It’s tough to bet against someone in as strong of a form as Trevisan is in right now. But Sasnovich has already knocked off two former Grand Slam champions in this tournament, so the moment and opponent shouldn’t be too big for her. Assuming both women play to their potential, we like Sasnovich’s attacking game to guide her to a win in what should be a fun and competitive match.

Sloane Stephens vs. Jil Teichmann

Jil Teichmann won an absolute battle against Victoria Azarenka on Friday, losing the first set 4-6 before fighting back to win the next two sets 7-5, 7-6. Sloane Stephens meanwhile picked up an easy 6-2, 6-3 win over Diane Parry in her third round match.

Teichmann is deservedly the favorite, but at this price we’re going to take a shot on Stephens. Consistency has always been an issue for the American, but she’s good enough to beat just about anyone while her game is on. And while Teichmann’s best effort would likely get the job done, it may be difficult to produce that effort coming off of her three-hour marathon match against Azarenka. Stephens is worth a stab here as a live underdog.
