Round four of the 2025 Formula 1 season has delivered its first major shake-up, with Oscar Piastri claiming pole position under the lights at the Bahrain International Circuit. Sunday’s race is scheduled for 10:00 PM ET, and following a drama-filled qualifying session and some late FIA penalties, the stage is set for a wide-open contest in the desert.
Oscar Piastri continued his meteoric rise with a stunning Q3 lap to secure pole position for the Bahrain Grand Prix, outqualifying several championship contenders in what was easily one of the tightest sessions of the season. “That final lap felt incredible. The car was on rails, and this result gives us a massive opportunity heading into Sunday,” said the McLaren star.
George Russell initially looked set to start alongside Piastri, but both he and rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli were handed post-qualifying grid penalties by the FIA for entering the pit lane without a session start signal. As a result, Russell drops to third on the grid, and Antonelli slips to fifth, despite a strong showing in his debut campaign.
Charles Leclerc benefits most from the reshuffle, promoted to P2 and earning his best grid spot of the year. With Mercedes and McLaren both showing race-winning pace, and Ferrari now on the front row, Bahrain could produce one of the most evenly contested races we’ve seen so far in 2025.
Piastri, now the -136 favorite to win with top online sportsbooks, will aim to control proceedings from the front with teammate Lando Norris starting from P6. After a commanding performance in Q3, sportsbooks have been quick to shorten the Aussie’s price across the board.
