Sunday, May 20 – 4:15p.m Local time Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos County, Kenya
There will be no reprieve for Gor Mahia as their congested fixture sees them return to Kenyan Premier League action this weekend, barely four days after hosting USM Alger in the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup.
K’Ogalo will play host to Sofapaka at the Kenyatta Stadium on Sunday afternoon, as they look to cover ground with the rest of the teams in the Kenyan Premier League due to their sporadic absence on the domestic front.
Gor Mahia’s midweek encounter with USMA did not pan out as initially planned, as the KPL champions registered a 0-0 draw with the Algerian side. On the flip side however, the hosts counted themselves lucky to have taken something from the match, having played for more than half an hour with ten men.
Joash Onyango handicapped his side after the centre back was sent off in the 55th minute for a lousy second bookable offence that altered the entire course of the match.
The build up to the encounter itself was marred with several huddles. Both teams were caught up in a traffic snarl up along the thronged Thika Super Highway and the lack of additional warm up time, coupled with the heavy downpour, turned everything into a nightmare.
The match still went on nonetheless, with the hosts dominating proceedings in the opening half. Gor however couldn’t make it count for anything, as they failed to convert any of their six clear cut chances created.

Despite having the numerical advantage, the North Africans appeared contented with proceedings, given that a draw would see them maintain a healthy lead at the top of the group.
Winger George Odhiambo had two penalty appeals waved off by Malian match referee Mamadou Keita; much to the disbelief of Dylan Kerr who was left venting his spleen on the touchlines.
For all the talk about a harsh first yellow card for Onyango and the penalty appeals, Gor just simply didn’t take their chances- a recurring trend that was evident against Mathare United in the League, Rayon Sports in the Confederation Cup and Hull City in the promotional friendly match.
Their second consecutive draw means K’Ogalo are still joint-second in Group D with Rayon Sports who likewise registered a barren draw with Yanga, while USM Alger leads the charge after one win and a draw.
Gor Mahia may have played three matches fewer than most of their KPL counterparts, but their title defense is well and truly taking shape. Mayienga currently enjoy a healthy lead at the summit of the League with 30 points, a four point cushion over second placed Mathare who missed cataclysmic chances of narrowing the gap with a goalless draw against Bandari last weekend.
Whenever Gor Mahia don’t show up, they can always count on results in other matches to fall for them; as may be the case when they line up against Sofapaka.
KPL Match prediction
Sofapaka have had a decent run in the League and are currently fourth with six points to make over Gor.
Although the League leaders will without question fatigued, the one thing they won’t rescind is their unbeaten run in the KPL.
