Liverpool, Spurs rescue acts close out super EPL weekend

Matchweek 13 of the 2023-24 English Premier League campaign was full of headline-grabbing results, not least at Anfield and Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Liverpool were in dire straights when Fulham, sitting in the lower half of the table, took a 3-2 lead through Bobby De Cordova-Reid in the 80th minute of a frenetic affair on Merseyside.

But the home side rallied and then levelled the scores in the 87th minute with a composed finish from Wataru Endo, who had come on as a substitute only a few minutes earlier.

The Reds rode that momentum to strike again moments later through Trent Alexander-Arnold, who had opened the scoring with a stunning free-kick in the first half — later ruled to be an own goal after ricocheting off the crossbar into Fulham keeper Bernd Leno’s back.

It ended 4-3 at Anfield, but there was more fun to be had just down the M62.

Manchester City’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur was never likely to be a boring affair, and those suspicions were confirmed after Spurs striker Son Heung-min scored at both ends inside the opening 10 minutes.

Phil Foden gave City the lead just after the half-hour mark, but Spurs levelled the ledger again when Giovani Lo Celso struck in the 69th minute.

After Jack Grealish restored the home team’s lead in the 81st minute, it appeared City had done enough to secure the points against an undermanned Tottenham side.

However, the visitors kept searching for a way through and eventually found it, with Dejan Kulusevski squaring things up again in the 90th minute.

The drama did not end there, with City denied a golden chance to score a late winner when the referee awarded the hosts a free-kick instead of giving advantage with Grealish through on goal.

That result capped an entertaining day of Premier League action that also included a 3-2 win for Chelsea against Brighton & Hove Albion, Aston Villa rescuing a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth, and West Ham sharing a 1-1 result with London rivals Crystal Palace.

Arsenal still sit atop the EPL standings following their 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, with Liverpool now two points back in second spot after leapfrogging Man City.

Bovada still has City as short-priced favourites at -149.25 to defend their title, with Arsenal (+333) and Liverpool (+400 the only other teams in the reckoning.
