NFL betting update: QBs dominate 2019-20 NFL MVP odds

Patrick Mahomes (+450 at Bovada) won the MVP last season in his first season as a starter and he has the best NFL betting lines to win the award this season. Andrew Luck (+650) has the second best NFL betting odds after winning the AP Comeback Player of the Year last season.

The quarterbacks dominate the NFL MVP odds for this upcoming season, which is no shock when QBs have won the award five years running.

Mahomes shattered Kansas City Chiefs records in his 2018-19 NFL MVP season, passing for 5097 yards with 50 TD and only 12 INT. Those numbers will be hard to match, but he has the support around him and a solid run game. His main playmaker in Tyreek Hill may miss some time because of his off-the-field issues, but they still have TE Travis Kelse and some other key pieces around him.

Luck had a great comeback season last year, passing for over 4,500 yards with 39 TD and 15 TD. The Indianapolis Colts have added WR Devin Funchess to give him another weapon. The run game is key: if Indy struggle to run the ball, Luck will have to do it all, like he has had to in the past, and will put up big numbers.

Can Aaron Rodgers (+900) stay healthy? That is the key for the Packers this season and obviously key for him winning another MVP award. He has some weapons and we know what he can do, but the two-time NFL MVP winner has to stay on the field, which has been an issue in two of the last three seasons.

The ageless Drew Brees (+1000) came second in the MVP voting last season and while he did not pass for over 4,000 yards he had 32 TD and only 5 INT. It helps he has a strong supporting cast including star WR Michael Thomas and RB Alvin Kamara, who is at +5000 to win the MVP after rushing for 883 yards with 709 receiving yards last season.

Can Baker Mayfield (+1300) avoid the sophomore slump? He won the NFL Rookie of the Year last season, passing for 3.725 yards. He has Jarvis Landry and a good WR corps that got much better in the off-season with the trade for star WR Odell Beckham Jr., who has the best NFL betting odds to win the MVP (+8000) for any wide receiver.

Tom Brady (+1400) did not win a fourth MVP last season, but he did win the Super Bowl for the sixth time. He had another great year and has Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman and off-season addition Demaryius Thomas as his main targets.

Russell Wilson (+2000) was great last season and may have to put up bigger numbers this season since the Seattle defense is no longer elite like it once was.

Carson Wentz (+2000) has the talent, but in the last two seasons he has got injured and missed the end of the season.

Phillip Rivers (+2500) may be a solid pick while not having the best NFL MVP betting lines. The Chargers are poised for a big season and the veteran’s play will be key in getting his team to the Super Bowl.

Two-time AP Defensive Player of the Year Sam Darnold (+7500) is a longshot to win the MVP award according to NFL bookmakers and that is no surprise. While he is seen as the top defensive player in the game, no defensive player has won the MVP since Lawrence Taylor did it way back in 1986.
