Peru gamblers no longer allowed bet online anonymously

Report by Opinium looks at the UK gambling industry

Peru has passed new iGaming regulations that prevent gambling operators from providing anonymity to clients, with officials citing the need to combat financial fraud, potential tax evasion, and money laundering.

In August 2022, Law 31,557 legalised gambling in the South American nation and paved the way for companies to enter into deals targeting the Peruvian market. However, the Commission of Economy, Banks, Finance, and Financial Intelligence has approved amendments to several articles of the law.

The amendment provides for an automated authorization process for online sportsbooks. Also, existing sportsbooks located near religious and educational institutions will be allowed to continue operations despite a recent law prohibiting the opening of sports betting venues within 150 metres of temples and schools.

Following the enactment of Law 31,557, Peru continues to navigate the complex digital gaming landscape. As part of this, the country has prohibited operators from offering any form of free remote betting or gaming, whether for promotional purposes or for educational purposes, such as through a game demo.

It has also stopped operators from directly or indirectly targeting minors with ads.
