The final day of the Euro 2020 group stage pits Portugal against France at the Puskas Arena on Wednesday night. Both teams have a chance to finish top of Group F, although the Portuguese will have to settle for second at best if Germany beat Hungary in the concurrent fixture. BettingPlanet’s soccer expert presents his best bets and analysis for the rematch of the Euro 2016 final.
Portugal vs France match analysis
Portugal had their colours lowered when losing 4-2 to Germany in Munich on Sunday afternoon. Their chances of remaining undefeated looked good when Cristiano Ronaldo netted his third goal of Euro 2020 in the 16th minute, but a pair of own goals from Ruben Dias and Raphael Guerreiro but them on the back foot. Some slack defending in the second half allowed Kai Havertz and Robin Gosens to put the game to bed.
As such, Portugal travel to Budapest needing to claim all three points to shore up a spot in the knockout stages. This line-up is stacked with talent, but outside of Ronaldo their attack has lacked bite. Coming up against this strong French line-up, the defending champions will need the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Jota and Bernardo Silva to all lift if they wish to walk away with all three points.

France enter their final group game in the box seat in terms of progression into the round of 16, sitting on four points from their opening two games. Despite dominating possession against Hungary, les Bleus were forced to work for a result after conceding in the second minute of injury time in the first half. They managed to save face when Antoine Griezmann netted an equaliser in the 66th minute.
Considering how loaded with talent this French line-up is, it is somewhat concerning that they mustered just four shots on target from their 15 attempts on goal against Hungary. If they convert just once from 15 chances against Portugal, then they might struggle to walk away with a result.
Having only scored two goals in Euro 2020, one of them being an own goal in their 1-0 win over Germany, France will be looking for much higher output from their forwards. With the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Karim Benzema, Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele in the mix, it surely won’t be long before France are back to their dynamic best.
Portugal vs France predictions & best bets
Match result: France
Pre-tournament favourites France were far from convincing in their 1-1 draw against Hungary last time out, but we expect them to bounce back against a Portugal side who lacked spark in their 4-2 loss to Germany. With Benzema and Mbappe yet to find the back of the net at Euro 2020, the French will need those two strikers to find top form before the knockout stages begin. Against a Portugal line-up who look fragile at the back, France will look to make a statement heading into the knockout stages.
Kylian Mbappe has now gone three straight games without finding the back of the net for his country and has just the one goal from his last eight international caps. A player with the class of Mbappe cannot be kept quiet for too long in tournament play, however, and we expect the superstar from PSG to get his name on the scoresheet against Portugal. He is one of the fastest players in world football, and if he gets the chance to run at this Portuguese back four, he will prove incredibly hard to stop.
