After breezing through the third round, the Italian star faces a tough challenge next up in his comeback tournament.
World No.1 Jannik Sinner continued his successful return to professional tennis at the 2025 Rome Masters on Monday, beating Jesper de Jong in straight sets to make the round of 16.
The Italian was rock solid from the baseline in his second match back after a three-month suspension, striking 21 winners to 16 unforced errors over the course of the 6-4, 6-2 victory.
Having opened as a -1428.57 favorite across tennis bookmakers, Sinner’s live betting odds continued to shorten after he broke de Jong twice in the first set to establish a 4-1 lead.
The 23-year-old wobbled slightly, conceding two breaks of his own and losing three games in a row, before regaining momentum and claiming the opening stanza.
“I started off very well today, then I had drop, which usually this drop is one and a half games,” Sinner said.
“Today was three games, three and a half games. But it’s normal.
“It’s the second match I play in three and a half months. It’s long time.”
He had no such issues in the second set, facing no break points and closing out the match in an hour and 34 minutes.
Next up, Sinner takes on the in-form Francisco Cerundolo in the fourth round, with Nags.bet pricing the three-time major champion at -400 to win.
Leading betting sites have also shortened Sinner’s title odds to +175, ahead of Carlos Alcaraz’s +200 and Alexander Zverev’s +750.
Alex de Minaur also advanced at the Rome Masters on Monday, beating Colombian lucky loser Hugo Dellien 6-4, 6-4.
In doing so, he becomes the only man to make the fourth round of each ATP Masters 1000 event this season, while his title odds have shortened to +1600 at Nags.bet.
“I’m very happy with the consistency that I showed just coming out and competing every single week,” de Minaur said after his victory over Dellien.
“But ultimately the goal is for more, to push for bigger and better things.
“That’s what I’m doing each and every week, giving myself a chance to do that.”
Casper Ruud and Tommy Paul were among Monday’s other winners, beating Matteo Berrettini and Tomas Machac respectively.
Paul meets de Minaur in the next round and is a +137 underdog against the Australian.
