The NBA Finals head back to Ohio after the Golden State Warriors failed to close out game 5 at home.
The Cavs had their backs against the wall, but came up big down the stretch and their superstar duo Kyrie Irving and LeBron James delivered two of their finest ever playoff performances.
Irving and James combined for an incredible 82 of their teams’ 112 points.
Only one other Cavalier (JR Smith, 10) reached double figures for the visitors.
LeBron James said coming into the match the focus was solely on forcing a game 6.
“We had a mindset that we wanted to come here and just extend our period and have another opportunity to fight for another day,” James said.
“That was our main concern, and we were able to do that.”
NBA Finals Game 6 betting and tips
For the second game running the away team has upset the home side.
The Cavaliers were able to do what no one thought was possible – extend the NBA Finals to a sixth game after their game 4 capitulation at home.
It all went wrong for the Warriors at home, who may have felt the weight of expectation to close out the series in game 5.
Steph Curry in particular was lackluster.
The back-to-back MVP shot a diabolical 38% field goal percentage and only a third of his three point attempts went in.
Harrison Barnes – who was pivotal in their game 4 victory – only managed five points, five rebounds and one assist in 37 minutes.
Golden State’s offensive woes were not just their only issue; their defensive set up was listless, conceding over 100 points for the second time this series.
The Cavaliers have won both times they have scored triple figures in these NBA Finals.
A lot of Cleveland’s offensive surge can be attributed to the absence of defensive dynamo Draymond Green, who missed through suspension.
Green’s presence on the court will stifle the free-flowing offense which saw Kyrie Irving and LeBron James combine for 82 points in game 5.
Warriors’ coach Steve Kerr was reluctant to say that Green would have made the defensive difference in game 5, but acknowledged the importance of his returning superstar.
“It’s too simple to say that. We weren’t very good defensively. We obviously knew we were without Draymond, so there’s no point in harping on that.” Kerr said.
“We had to play better, and we didn’t. Both those guys played terrific games, shot the ball well. I thought our defensive communication was lacking.
“We had some plays where we didn’t pick up in transition and we had some cross matches that we didn’t identify and they got free.”
While Kerr would never admit it to his players, Green’s return will boost their defensive exponentially, which could be the difference.
Last year’s series ended in Cleveland game 6 – we are predicting the same outcome a year later.
Golden State will complete their back-to-back title glory away from home for the second year running, condemning the King to another NBA Finals defeat.
