UEFA Champions League football returns to London on Wednesday night as Tottenham Hotspur host Red Bull Leipzig in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie.
Spurs have high expectations at this level after reaching last year’s final in Madrid, where they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool. This is the club’s third consecutive year in the Champions League knockout rounds.
Despite their growing consistency on the European stage, Tottenham have struggled at times on the domestic front this season. Things are starting to look up, however, as Jose Mourinho’s men are now seven games undefeated in all competitions since their 1-0 loss to Liverpool on January 11.

While Spurs are now UCL regulars, RB Leipzig are making their first-ever appearance in the knockout phase of Europe’s premier club tournament. The Germans qualified as the top team in Group G, ahead of Olympique Lyonnais, Benfica and Zenit.
But whereas Tottenham are struggling to keep pace with the top four in the English Premier League, Leipzig are right in the hunt for the Bundesliga title. Their 3-0 win over Werder Bremen last time out leaves them only a point behind Bayern Munich, the league leaders.
Both sides are missing key players, so their depth will be tested on Wednesday night.

Harry Kane is out, leaving Lucas Moura to lead the line with Dele Alli, Steven Bergwijn and Son Heung-min in support. Moussa Sissoko is sidelined with a knee problem, while Ben Davies (ankle) and Erik Lamela (groin) will have to pass fitness tests.
Leipzig are missing several starters in defence. Ibrahima Konate and club captain Willi Orban are both injured, while Dayot Upamecano is suspended. Also absent are Tyler Adams (calf) and Kevin Kampl (ankle).
Spurs need someone to step up and fill the Kane-shaped void up front, and Son Heung-min is the top candidate. The Korean forward has six goals from his last five starts in all competitions, including a match-winning brace against Aston Villa at the weekend. Tottenham have other options in attack, but that sort of form is impossible to ignore.
Neither team brings blistering domestic form into this clash, so it might come down to experience. While Leipzig have never made it this far before, Spurs played in a Champions League final less than a year ago. Factor in the home advantage and it is Tottenham’s leg to lose.
